Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland’s Human Resource Department is growing and looking for a dynamic Benefits Specialist (Benefits Services Counselor) to join the team! It is an exciting time to join the university as we embark upon several key improvements, such as a new HRIS system, through Workday and new service enhancements.

As a Benefits Specialist within UMD’s Benefits Team, you will:
  • Provide one-on-one consultation to faculty and staff considering retirement or applying for disability. The Benefits Specialist exhibits the core value of compassion as they provide hands-on virtual and in-person benefits guidance to employees or beneficiaries during significant life events.
  • Provide expert knowledge and training in health insurance, flexible spending, life insurance, tuition remission, defined-benefit and defined-contribution retirement plans, disability, family care, and other work-life programs.
  • Research complex benefits issues, evaluate eligibility, and provide a thorough analysis.
  • Partner with other University HR teams to improve processes and implement creative solutions to serve our faculty and staff.
  • Engage our employee population to help them understand the benefits offered within our University and State of Maryland benefit plans.
  • Serve on University and system-wide committees and provide outreach to campus partners.
  • Engage frequently with state agencies, other Universities, and benefit vendors to assist faculty/staff with their benefits questions.
  • Help employees with Supplemental Retirement contribution limit compliance and serve as a campus expert for consultation on limits. Engage with Retirement Vendors to market financial learning opportunities to employees.
  • Collaborate and serve as a core member of the benefits team to deliver campus benefit presentations, training, annual open enrollment information sessions, and preretirement seminars.
  • Monitor benefit compliance through reporting and closely reviewing benefit transmission.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certification, etc.):
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College/University.

Minimum Experience:
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional human resources experience.
  • Two years of benefits experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of employee benefits which may include retirement, health insurance, and other voluntary benefits.
  • Strong customer-service skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing environments and new processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise a high level of discretion and good judgment.
  • Strong team player with an ability to work collaboratively and foster effective relationships with a broad range of constituents, including administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong presentation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.

Other Required Qualifications:
The incumbent must obtain Agency Benefits Coordinator certification for State of Maryland Health programs, State Retirement Certification, and notary within one year of their new hire date and attend all required training programs.
