RF Systems Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Do you desire a rewarding career applying your problem solving and creative thinking skills toward solving difficult engineering problems?

Are you interested in applying your RF system knowledge and experience on projects critical to our national defense?

Are you ready to partner with senior RF subject matter experts to dive deeply into RF system modeling, simulation and algorithm development?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

We are seeking an RF Engineer to help us model, design and evaluate cutting edge RF sensors, including RF seekers for advanced weapon systems.  This work is located at APL’s Eglin Air Force Base field office.  Your work will span many aspects of RF engineering including: RF transmitters, receivers and apertures; propagation effects; radar cross section; synthetic RF scenes; range-Doppler mapping and synthetic aperture radar; and RF signal processing and detection algorithms.  The weapons and systems that you will work on are vital to maintaining the U.S. Department of Defense’s technological advantage over our nation’s adversaries. You'll be joining our hardworking, deeply knowledgeable team of engineers dedicated to developing innovative systems critical to success in complex, future battle spaces. We highly value collaboration, inclusivity and diversity of thought as key components of our culture and ultimately our technical success.

As an RF Systems Engineer...

  • Your primary responsibility will be to leverage modeling tools and simulations to design and analyze RF systems and seekers for advanced weapon systems, including air-breathing and boost-glide hypersonic weapons.
  • You will use existing or develop new analytical tools, algorithms and software in the performance of your duties.
  • You will collaborate with a diverse team of highly skilled engineers and scientists to integrate your work into comprehensive, “all up round” weapon designs and analyses.
  • You will research, investigate, and experiment with existing and new RF sensing technologies to identify creative approaches to meeting difficult RF systems and seekers requirements for realistic tactical employment scenarios.
  • You will analyze the performance of modeled systems in extremely challenging environments to include the presence of adversary systems, sources of interference, clutter, suboptimal communications and data links.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics or another related field.
  • Have at least three years of RF engineering experience.
  • Possess excellent knowledge in RF physics, including one or more of the following: RF apertures, radar waveforms, electromagnetic wave propagation, radar signal processing, RCS modeling, automatic target recognition, target tracking and missile decision logic theory.
  • Have experience using RF models, simulations and analysis tools to assess RF system performance.
  • Have experience with developing physics-based RF algorithms and/or models.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Possess a Master's degree or PhD in a related technical field.
  • Have at least six years of experience of RF engineering for military applications, such as: military radar programs, missile seekers, RF system modeling and analysis, signal processing development or test.
  • Have experience writing and implementing radar/seeker algorithms within six degree of freedom simulations.
  • Have RF hardware, RF system on a chip, SDR and/or FPGA programming experience.
  • Have a final Top Secret Security clearance.
