Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Under general supervision of the Facilities Manager, the incumbent is responsible for performing the tasks associated with accomplishing the goals of the department and the mission of the Universities at Shady Grove which is operating and maintaining an environment that is safe and environmentally friendly.

The position will assume the full responsibility of electrical systems to ensure compliance with the electrical codes (national, state and local) and the electrical policies and procedures of USG.

Functions as a leader involved in electrical trades work. Performs as a working member of the team with expertise in the assigned trade’s area, provide guidance and instruction or supervision to others, and have responsibility for project completion.

This position would be required to either work 7am – 3:30 pm or 10am – 6:30 pm

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:
Four years progressively responsible experience in the electrical trade.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the theory, principles, methods and techniques used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, equipment, and apparatus carrying less than 13,000 volts.
  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions; of OSHA regulations related to the electrical trade; of electrical codes, Underwriters Rules for wiring and installation.
  • Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the electrical trade including testing equipment such as ohmeters, battery and buzzer and oscilloscopes.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications; to prepare summaries and reports; to communicate effectively and follow directions; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from lifts, ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

  • High School/GED diploma.
  • Experience in Facilities / Lab maintenance, multi-facility environment desired, Experience with energy management system (Siemens) a plus.
  • Knowledge of electrical devices such as controls, switches, starters, transformers, motors, and panel boards.
  • Skills in diagnosing the cause of electrical failure;
  • Ability to comprehend new technology, make mathematical computations; ability to prepare summaries and reports; communicate effectively, and follow directions.

Additional Certifications:

Required:
  • Montgomery County journeyman’s license.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid class “C” Maryland License or equivalent with less than 6 points.

Physical Demands

This position is considered “Essential Personnel" subject to 24-hour 7 day/week span of operations. Work is generally performed during normal working hours however it is expected that those in this position work whenever necessary to ensure the facility is running safely and efficiently at all times. After hours emergency calls are expected, Evening shift. Flexible work.
