Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Positon Summary: The Office of Student Orientation and Transition is responsible for the successful transition and integration of approximately 8,500 new undergraduate students each year into the University of Maryland’s academic and social community. The office is responsible for coordinating orientation programs, first-year seminar and transition courses, and special programs for the benefit of these students and their parents and family members. The Coordinator of Student Transition plays an integral part in the fulfillment of these responsibilities through supporting the Assistant Director of Student Transition with Terp Family Orientation and transition initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the administrative and scheduling needs of 125 sections of UNIV100; a one credit course to support the transition of first-year students
  • Recruit, hire and train (20) UNIV100 teaching assistants
  • Manage the training and development of (5) Teaching Assistant Ambassadors
  • Co-teach a section of EDUC388U & EDCP498T, the training courses for UNIV100 TAs
  • Plan and facilitate UNIV100 instructor trainings and resource development
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive second/sophomore year transition program to support the development of this population of students
  • Collaborate with campus partners to facilitate transfer student transition programming efforts
  • Provide administrative support to UNIV362: Designing Your Life After College, a two credit course to support the transition needs of junior and senior students
  • Advise Alpha Lambda Delta-First Year Honor Society
  • Coordinate first-year leadership workshops, such as MBTI, Clifton Strengths, and Returning Student Panels? Execute the Terp Family Orientation program for the summer and winter, coordinating with presenting campus partners, managing programmatic issues as they arise and supervising Terp Family Orientation Advisors during each program.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to facilitate portions of the Terp Family Orientation Program (Presentations, Terp Trips, Receptions, etc.)
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of the UMD Orientation Staff: Student Coordinators (3), Orientation Advisors (31) and Orientation Office Assistants (3)
  • Provide general support to UMD’s New Student Orientation program
  • Other projects and duties as assigned by the Assistant Director

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: 
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. 

Experience: 
  • Two-Four years of experience working with undergraduate students, preferably in a higher education setting. (Ex: orientation, resident life, student activities, admissions/campus ambassadors)

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credit being equivalent to one year of experience.

  • Ability to make effective use of time, plan, and coordinate multiple projects at once, and take initiative.
  • Developed organizational and computer skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Friendly, flexible, service-oriented manner, and sound judgment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Additional Information:

The salary will be in the Low 50’s to Mid 60’s

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and small carry parcels, packages and other items, to walk short distances.
