Montgomery College, Maryland, has an immediate need for two (2) Placement and Learning Advisors (Germantown and Rockville locations), Workforce Development and Continuing Education.  These are non-bargaining, exempt, grade 27 positions. The Germantown location has a work schedule of Monday-Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. The Rockville location has a work schedule of Monday-Thursday 11:00 am – 7:30 pm and Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. These positions are eligible for teleworking up to one (1) day per week, after successful completion of initial employment probationary period.

This position is based on availability of funding and is currently funded through the Tech Metro Area Pathways (TechMap) Grant, United States Department of Labor. This is a temporary position with benefits funded through September 30, 2026. Employment continuation beyond this period is contingent upon need and funding.

The placement and learning advisors are responsible for the assessment, testing, counseling, placement and other related activities in workforce development and continuing education for current and prospective students to determine proficiency level for placement in appropriate courses as well as advise and counseling students around learning goals and educational and career opportunities.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts and oversees student orientation, intake, and career plan development for students seeking to enroll in courses in one of the identified pathways at Montgomery College’s Information Technology Institute.  
    • Schedules and leads registration and orientation activities for new and returning students.
    • Walks students through available career paths within the IT sector, including level of credentialing needed, wages, and career progression over time. 
    • Determines a personal college and career plan that incorporates a participant’s past experience with level of training desired and career options 
    • Uses the data management system (DMS) to create and maintain student case files. Assists students in using the DMS. 
    • Communicates with culturally, linguistically, and educationally diverse students, instructors, and staff regarding placement, progress, and attendance issues. 
    • Creates and updates intake, career navigation, and marketing materials. 
  • Provides counseling and support to students who are enrolled in an approved Information Technology Institute pathway to ensure the successful completion of the program.
    • Meets with students individually and/or in groups providing information and guidance on program offerings and Montgomery College learning options and supports to completion. 
    • Provides guidance to TechMap participants in the areas of career guidance, resume writing, using on-line career exploration tools. Facilitates workshops or refer the students to the appropriate College resource. Refers students to resources, learning centers, departments, and units at the college. 
    • Connects participants to work and learn opportunities, internships, and apprenticeships as eligible and appropriate. 
    • Tracks students' certification attainment and employment outcomes.
    • Develops a wrap-around services referral plan, including services that help with transportation, housing, and childcare. 
    • Works with Program staff, MC Disability Support Services, and other outside agencies to address the special needs of enrolled learners, including special accommodations for people with disabilities and English language learners. 
  • Provides and participates in professional development.
  • Provides outreach on behalf of the TechMap program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, clinical psychology, social work or a related field, or any combination of education, training, and experience providing understanding of the field and the ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Two to three years of progressively responsible experience working in higher education or a similar environment.  
  • Two years of experience in academic advising, counseling, assessing, planning, designing and implementing adult learning strategies for diverse targeted groups or individuals.  
  • Experience providing workshops or instruction.
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the theories and methods of academic and/or career counseling.
  • Knowledge of the College’s policies, mission, vision, and the role of the College within the community, the State of Maryland, and higher education.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, project management software, familiarity with computer hardware and peripheral devices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to lead, instruct, train, guide and motivate others.
  • Ability to work independently and with multiple teams.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment.
  • Ability to understand needs and issues of diverse groups.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, clinical psychology, or social work
  • Fluency in another language strongly preferred.
  • Experience developing and facilitating engaging career development-related workshops to groups.
  • Knowledge of population to be served, including immigrant community needs and issues, those in need of language and literacy instruction, and those with learning disabilities.
  • Experience with the content area (Cloud Technologies, Computer Networks, Cybersecurity, Data Analysis, Programming and Software Development, and Web Development))
  • Global Career Development Facilitator or similar career development certification

Hiring Range $61,529 to $79,977 annually. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.  Please include a complete resume including all relevant and related work experience.
