Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has an immediate need for a full-time Geoscience Instructional Laboratory Coordinator in the Science Engineering and Technology Department. The work schedule is Monday-Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, occasional evening and weekend hours will be required as needed. This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 27 position. Non-exempt positions are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. The Instructional Laboratory Coordinator oversees and coordinates the daily operations and activities of assigned instructional laboratory. Provides technical assistance to students and faculty performing research and accessing instructional resources. Demonstrates learning, scientific and technical principles through classroom experiments. The work involves set-up and organizing work areas for classroom instruction, and coordinating with and providing instructional assistance services to faculty. Plans activities, orders and picks-up supplies and materials, maintain facility, check/maintain equipment, and schedule student assistants and/or staff in order to meet instructional objectives. The incumbent follows specific guidelines developed by faculty/supervisor in providing instructional support in the laboratory and the completed work is reviewed for adherence to the guidelines and accuracy of the information provided.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Sets up and takes down lab equipment for all labs in astronomy, geology, meteorology, and physical science courses.
  • Maintains the laboratory and ensures that they care clean and in good order.
  • Organizes the work and set-up equipment, instruments and tools for use by the students.
  • Performs scheduled routine maintenance for major pieces of equipment throughout the year as appropriate and as specified in instruction manuals.
  • Troubleshoots problems with equipment.
  • Oversees maintenance contracts for equipment.
  • Ensures vendor fulfills contract and services equipment properly.
  • Maintains set up notebooks describing lab exercises and equipment details.
  • Assists faculty with demonstrations, laboratory activities, and public outreach activities.
  • Assists faculty in developing new lab exercises and lab manuals.
  • Maintains an adequate supply of materials for labs by ordering equipment and supplies from outside vendors.
  • Maintains inventory listing of equipment and materials.
  • Develops safety procedures for geosciences lab activities.
  • Maintains Science Center Observatory.
  • Supervises student employees in geosciences.
  • Maintains system and applications software, peripheral equipment, boards and add-ons, productivity utilities as well as other special-purpose software and hardware products.
  • Coordinates with the Office of Information Technology to install and test software and hardware.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree related to physical science, geology,  astronomy, meteorology or earth science or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Four years of experience performing instructional assistant/associate duties.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, and techniques of assigned subject area work, tools, equipment and materials, and hazard/safety precautions.
  • Considerable knowledge of instructional technology, equipment and educational materials employed in assigned instructional laboratory, and administrative practices and procedures, including purchasing and record keeping.
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of learning as applied to the role of instructional support staff and laboratory procedures.
  • Skill in communicating information about the subject area and working effectively with others.
  • Skill in using word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and budgeting programs, e-mail, the internet, etc., and planning and organizing laboratory and shop sessions.
  • Ability to operate an instructional laboratory; to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish work assignments, using personal computers and instructional technology.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship

  • Master’s degree

Hiring Range $29.58 to $38.45 per hour. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.  Please include a complete resume including all relevant and related work experience.
