Postdoctoral Associate

Job Description

Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Biological Science or closely related field in hand by August 2023. Technical experience and competence in research activities. Being a first author on manuscript(s) published in high-ranking physiology or pharmacology journals that are known for rigor. Technical experience with patch clamp electrophysiology (at minimum whole cell recordings) and quantitative analysis. Specialized training and experience in operating equipment, carrying out test procedures, and using special methods for data collection and interpretation.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with working with microscopy and appropriate computer programs for analysis (Igor Pro, QuB, Excel). Technical experience with confocal and/or TIRF microscopy. Technical experience with patch clamp recordings and analysis of single ion channels.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator Lonnie WoIlmuth in the Department of Neurobiology & Behavior . The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University.

The Postdoctoral Associate will carry out research in the Wollmuth Laboratory on NMDA receptors, which are proteins involved in fast signaling in the brain and implicated in numerous brain disorders. Part of our laboratory studies the role of disease-associated missense mutations in NMDA receptors on brain dysfunction, including in epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders. For experiments related to the specific position, we want to understand how the missense mutation alters the function of NMDA receptors-how they change the way the receptor takes glutamate and turns it into opening of the associated ion channel. To do so requires skill in molecular biology, cell culture, patch clamp electrophysiology, confocal imaging, and TIRF microscopy.

  • Maintaining cell cultures.
  • Carrying out specific experiments concerning membrane physiology of NMDA receptors expressed in HEK 293 cells using patch clamp electrophysiology and TIRF microscopy.
  • Carrying out appropriate data analysis and organization.
  • Organizing molecular biology.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding.
