Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

JIFSAN, a joint program of the University of Maryland and the U.S. FDA CFSAN (Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition), is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate to participate in applied regulatory research for analytical method development and the validation of analytical methods for quantifying per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in FDA regulated products. Incumbent will collaboratively design experiments, prepare samples, and analyze them using mass spectrometry to detect and quantify PFAS in FDA regulated products. Data analysis, appropriate for quantitative and qualitative detection of PFAS analytes, will be performed using tools available. Reports will be written to facilitate communication with management. Additional duties will include monitoring instrument performance metrics in lab quality assurance and control
programs, as well as providing routine instrument maintenance and calibration service. Completed
research studies are expected to be published in peer-reviewed journals.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform non-targeted mass spectrometric methods for the determination of unknown PFAS in food and feed extracts. (65%)
  • Investigate modifications to sample preparation methods that could provide lower method detection limits. (25%)
  • Present data at meetings and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals. (10%)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or equivalent field.
  • Three years of experience in the application of mass spectrometry methods, preferably with experience in developing non-targeted mass spectrometry methods.
  • Demonstrable broad and extensive knowledge of mass spectrometry instrumentation and the use of software for the identification of PFAS of both targeted and nontargeted data.
