Job Description


This position will report to the Director of the GlycoMIP User Facility. The postdoctoral associate will work with other GlycoMIP team members to conceive and execute carbohydrate-related research projects, specifically in the area of synthesis. This position will also participate in training and outreach activities as required. The postdoctoral associate is a motivated team-player who, while leading synthesis activities, works effectively with others to complete related characterization, including chromatographic, NMR and mass spectrometry services.

Information about GlycoMIP

GlycoMIP is a National Science Foundation-funded Materials Innovation Platform, MIP (https://mip.org/about ) with user facilities at Virginia Tech (VT) and the University of Georgia (https://glycomip.org/ ).  Virginia Tech maintains synthesis and characterization resources, including two automated glycan synthesizers.  The user facility, along with a large in-house research effort and a vibrant education and outreach program, support the growing glycomaterials scientific community.  Virginia Tech currently seeks a postdoctoral associate to lead its carbohydrate synthesis activities.  


Required Qualifications

• PhD in Chemistry or related field with the PhD awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment and with a minimum of one year of eligibility remaining
• Documented experience with synthesis-based glycosylation chemistry
• Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills
• Ability to design and execute complex experiments
• Capable of working independently
• Success working in a team environment


Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to trouble-shoot equipment and instrumentation
• Experience with proposal writing and review processes
• Experience preparing and effectively delivering instructional materials
• Experience using laboratory management systems
