Postdoctoral Associate/Sr. Postdoctoral Associate

Job Description

Postdoctoral Associate/Sr. Postdoctoral Associate

The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for the Postdoctoral Associate/Senior Postdoctoral position. The title/rank will be contingent upon the selected candidate's skills and experience in their area of expertise.

Postdoctoral Associate:

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand by June 2023.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field in hand by June 2023. Experience with field work, remote sensing, instrumentation, and cloud microphysics and dynamics process-orient research. Knowledge of statistical data analysis, neural networks and/or machine learning techniques.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Pavlos Kollias . The selected candidate will join the Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory Radar Observatory (SBRO) . SBRO researchers seek to gain improved understanding--through remote sensing, process-level theory and analysis, and modeling studies--of the microphysical and dynamical processes that impact the lifecycle of clouds to improve their representation in climate models and increase our ability to understand and project global change. SBRO is a leader in several emerging areas of remote sensing including cm- and mm-wavelength radars, lidars, surface cameras, satellite observations, phased array and spaceborne radars. The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists at the Environmental & Climate Sciences Department (ECSD) and the Center for Multiscale Applied Sensing. The candidate will have a strong interest in the use of observational datasets for the study of cloud microphysics and dynamics and their interaction with the free atmosphere. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Postdoctoral Associate duties will include:

  • Under the auspices of the Principal Investigator, develop methodologies for the scientific exploration of phased-array radars (PARs) for studying convective dynamics and microphysics using observations from the ESCAPE field campaign, numerical model output and a PAR simulator.
  • Develop novel methods for integrating models and surface/space-based observations for the study of cloud and precipitation microphysics.
  • Participate and assist in the preparation, writing, and publication of scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Senior Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand by June 2023. Three (3) years of full-time related research experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field. Demonstrated experience in understanding processes that control clouds and/or aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions. Experience with field work, remote sensing, instrumentation, and process-orient research. Knowledge of statistical data analysis, neural networks and/or machine learning techniques.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Senior Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Pavlos Kollias . This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community. The candidate is expected to co-lead the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students and SBRO research staff. In addition, the candidate is expected to contribute to the writing of science proposals and their submission to federal agencies.

Senior Postdoctoral duties will include:

  • Develop methodologies for the scientific exploration of phased-array radars (PARs) for studying convective dynamics and microphysics using observations from the ESCAPE field campaign, numerical model output and a PAR simulator.
