Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This position is charged with attending to the community development needs of Native American Indian/Indigenous students as well as providing leadership in advancing cross-cultural learning initiatives for the larger UMD student community through the MICA office.

Specific Duties:
  • Foster community among Native American Indian/Indigenous students, serving as an advocate for the needs of these communities in and out of the classroom and promoting their intellectual, personal, social, leadership, and identity development.
  • Develop, implement, and/or support programmatic initiatives that foster learning about diversity and multiculturalism and its relationship to leadership development both within and across identity-based student groups by collaborating with staff within the MICA office as well as across campus units and departments.
  • Co-manage administrative tasks related to data collection, MICA website updates, TERPLink (UMD-branded Campus Labs), program budgeting, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree required in a field of education, counseling, student affairs, multicultural education, or a related field.
Experience:
  • One year of professional and/or two years of graduate-level experience in Student Affairs work in a University setting is required.
  • Experience in developing and implementing programs that promote student learning about identity and difference within the context of a multicultural society is required.
  • Experience and interest in working with students of color, LGBT-identified students, and students with multiple, intersecting identities, including first-generation. Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.

Preferences:

  • The ideal candidate shall possess sound judgment, maturity, sensitivity to the complexities of identity development, and passion for effecting change in dynamic multicultural environments.
  • Experience in advising cultural or identity-based student organizations is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in using the arts (e.g., theater, music, visual/fine arts) as a way to promote learning about diversity and multiculturalism is highly desirable.

Physical Demands

Work takes place in both an office environment and in on-campus buildings; will require ability to travel throughout campus. There may be occasions when the incumbent will need to work outside their normal work shift to accommodate other shifts that exist in the organization for purposes of meetings, training, etc.
