About the Position:

The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) is a resource for the college’s faculty and is responsible for leading college-wide efforts to support faculty excellence and promote a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for CHSS faculty throughout their careers at Mason.
As a member of the CHSS executive leadership team, the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs leads the college’s activities related to proactive faculty recruitment and retention, performance management, and career development in support of the college’s vision for faculty excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service. This position also ensures effective and efficient coordination with university-wide faculty affairs activities and support structures.
Responsibilities:

Serves on the College’s Executive Leadership Team:
  • Participates fully in the strategic budgeting and planning processes, as well as routine problem-solving and management processes;
  • Collaborates effectively with other members of the college’s leadership team and CHSS stakeholders on implementation of the CHSS Inclusive Excellence plan; and
  • Leads strategic initiatives to advance and support faculty career development.

Faculty Recruitment and Retention:
  • Oversees the college Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team’s efforts to ensure that search processes for full-time faculty positions, post-doctoral teaching, and research fellows support proactive and successful recruitment of a diverse and inclusive faculty body;
  • Oversees the CHSS DEI team’s faculty retention programming, and ensures effective and efficient coordination with university-level programming;
  • Coordinates new faculty orientation, providing essential information about college and university resources;
  • Coordinates the college’s postdoctoral research and teaching fellows program;
  • Supports faculty joint appointment MOU negotiations, draft documents, and oversees university affiliate faculty approvals for the college; and
  • Tracks data on new hires, faculty departures, and faculty demographics.

Faculty Review and Contract Renewal – Standards and Processes:
  • Assists the Dean and other members of the college’s executive leadership team with faculty contract renewal, promotion, and tenure review processes;
  • Coordinates the college’s mid-term review process for Chairs/Directors;
  • Monitors and ensures a high-quality annual review process for faculty throughout the college. Works with Chairs/Directors to ensure annual faculty reviews are completed in a timely, standardized, and productive manner;
  • Monitors and evaluates faculty workload policy as implemented in departments/programs and reported in the annual review process, and assists Chairs/Directors with iterative updates;
  • Monitors and evaluates local academic units’ promotion, tenure standards, and guidelines, and assists Chairs/Directors with iterative updates; and
  • Tracks data on faculty promotion, career ladder development, and demographics for the college’s tenure-line and term instructional faculty.

Faculty Support, Career Development, Professionalism, and Recognition:
  • Partners effectively with Chairs/Directors, as well as university offices in the provision of career development support to faculty throughout their careers, and especially at critical transition points (e.g., promotion and tenure review; review for promotion to full professor; transition from term to tenure-track contracts, etc.); mentors individual faculty as needed regarding preparation of RPT casebooks;
  • Supports inclusive pedagogy through coaching and mentorship of Chairs/Directors, as well as individual faculty as needed; ensures effective coordination with university-level programming and offices; stays informed regarding best practices for faculty in a rapidly changing higher education landscape; coaches faculty and programs on evolving practices when needed;
  • Coordinates CHSS competitive awards programming for term instructional faculty career development (such as term faculty study leaves) and post-tenure career development (such as Career Development Faculty Research and Development Awards);
  • Provides individual career counseling sessions upon faculty request to assist with establishing career goals and plans; ensures effective and efficient coordination with university-level offices; coordinates the college’s nomination process for prestigious university-level awards and its efforts to support faculty engagement in nationally recognized higher education leadership development programs; and
  • Partners with the Associate Dean of Research and Assistant Dean of Strategic Communications and Marketing to coordinate recognition of college faculty achievements.

College-Level and Unit-Level Shared Governance:
  • Assists, mentors, and supports CHSS Chairs/Directors with development of and updates to local academic unit shared governance policies and guidelines such as bylaws, RPT guidelines, workload guidelines, and designs of sub-chair roles and administrative responsibilities;
  • Supports and collaborates with CHSS Faculty Assembly leadership to ensure effective faculty shared governance operations and processes;
  • Serves as ex officio on CHSS Faculty Assembly’s Term Faculty Affairs Committee; and
  • Assists the Dean and Faculty Assembly leadership with updates as needed to college policies and guidelines related to faculty workload, promotion, and tenure requirements and expectations.

Additional Duties:
  • Serves on relevant university and college committees;
  • Maintains knowledge of trends in higher education through attendance at conferences and engagement in higher education professional organizations; and
  • Undertakes any associated or alternative duties as directed by the dean.


Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in a CHSS discipline. Candidates must hold or be eligible for a tenured position at the rank of Associate Professor in CHSS;
  • Ability and experience supporting a culture of inclusion and diversity in higher education;
  • Prior experience interpreting and applying academic standards and designing/managing performance review processes;
  • Excellent administrative, analytical, communication, interpersonal, managerial, and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to think strategically and lead initiatives that affect and involve multiple college and university stakeholders;
  • Ability to build strong partnerships within the College and University;
  • Ability to manage highly sensitive information appropriately;
  • Strong collaboration, persuasion, and consensus-building skills;
  • Skill and experience examining and reengineering operations and procedures, as well as designing and implementing new initiatives to improve quality outcomes; and
  • Skill and experience in organizing resources and establishing priorities, budget preparation, and the ability to manage budgetary expenditures for compliance with an approved budget.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates hold or are eligible for a tenured position at the rank of Full Professor in CHSS;
  • Experience in a research-intensive university; and
  • Experience in academic leadership roles involving faculty recruitment, retention, career development, and/or faculty-focused inclusive excellence initiatives.
