Job Summary

The Center for Advancing Scholarship to Transform Learning (CASTLE) and Learning Assistant (LA) initiative at Rochester Institute of Technology are seeking applicants for a Program Coordinator.  This is a unique opportunity for an applicant to build on existing interest in student success, faculty development and innovative pedagogies while developing key skills in program management.  The Program Coordinator reports to the CASTLE and LA Program Director, Dr. Scott Franklin.  The position is renewable, pending successful fundraising efforts and permission of the College of Science Dean whose budget funds this position.


Job Responsibilities

Full authority to make all decisions at their discretion pertaining to student and faculty acceptance into the LA program, including but not limited to:

  • Creating, administering and evaluating student and faculty applications
  • Supervising student employees (Learning Assistants)
  • Working directly with School Heads to identify faculty, courses and content most amenable to LA assistance
  • Working directly with faculty to develop pedagogical materials
  • Identifying and developing program reports, grant writing, and fundraising efforts

Classroom instructor, with full authority over all course decisions for:

  • Learning Assistant Pedagogy Class (“STEM Education Research and Practice”), 2 credits, offered in Spring & Fall Semesters
  • IMPRESS “Metacognitive Practice in the Sciences” course, 3 credits, 2 sections offered in Fall semesters

Course responsibilities include

  • Developing all course materials, drawing on advanced knowledge of student metacognition and pedagogical practices
  • Supervise student course-based projects
  • Manage all course grade assignments
  • Supervise course Learning Assistant (undergraduate class assistant)

Continue and expand IMPRESS/COS student cohort and related Access Network activities, including:

  • Work with COS students to form student learning communities centered around Metacognition and common issues
  • Work with undergraduate representatives to the Access network, an NSF funded consortium of nine institutions with programs dedicated to fostering student agency, equity and social justice
  • Represent RIT as Core Organizer in Access Network activities, strategic planning and grant writing

Support organization and fundraising/development of related CASTLE activities, e.g.:

  • Identify and contribute to external grant writing efforts
  • Collaborate, where appropriate, on scholarly articles, presentations and other dissemination activities

Required Qualifications

  • M.S. in a STEM or STEM Education area is required; a Ph.D. in a STEM or STEM Education area is preferred; a degree in physics, biology, or chemistry is preferred, as is a familiarity with the literature and practice of faculty development and institutional change
  • Dedication to and demonstrated experience with diversity and inclusion initiatives is essential.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with the ability to work independently, flexibly, efficiently, and accurately.
  • Independent judgment, initiative, adaptability, and the ability to coordinate a variety of activities will also be needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the literature and practice of faculty/TA development in general, and Learning Assistant programs in particular

The mission of the Center for the Advancement of Scholarship to Transform LEarning (CASTLE)–a leading innovator in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics educational practices and research–is to improve science and math education and outreach initiatives by fostering collaboration between science and math educators and researchers.
CASTLE encompasses myriad STEM Education initiatives at RIT including:

  • RIT HHMI Inclusive Excellence: strengthened inclusion in STEM education from a multicultural base of faculty, staff, and students in the College of Science
  • Summer Math Applications in Science with Hands-On (SMASH) Experience: designed to increase the engagement of middle-school girls in STEM
  • RIT Learning Assistant (LA) program: geared toward student interaction and engagement in collaborative problem solving
  • Professional Development for Emerging Education Researchers (PEER): created to increase the scholarship and teaching effectiveness of junior faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and senior faculty
