Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

JIFSAN, a joint program of the University of Maryland and the U.S. FDA CFSAN (Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition), is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate to work in collaboration with scientists inside and outside the FDA on the development of methodologies in the field of NMR spectroscopy for the analysis of fluorine in complex matrices requiring a wide variety of sample preparation techniques, including, but not limited to, extractions, separations, milling, and simple chemical reactions. All of these will be performed in effort to support food safety initiatives. Additional duties will include monitoring instrument performance metrics and instrument maintenance. Written reports will be needed for intra-and inter-office communication for collaboration and coordination of research efforts. Completed research studies are expected to be presented at conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and optimize NMR methods and analyses for the identification and quantification of fluorinated substances using liquid state and solid-state methodologies. (50%)
  • Implement developed methods on selected samples of interest. (20%)
  • Evaluate existing liquid state, 19F-NMR methods for identification and quantification of
  • PFAS. (10%)
  • Monitor and maintain NMR and related instrumentation and devices to ensure quality and consistency of research data. (10%)
  • Prepare manuscripts and presentations. (10%)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or equivalent field.
  • Experience with NMR and/or SSNMR and general analytical sample preparation skills.
  • The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge and experience of NMR spectroscopy in both running an instrument and analysis of NMR data. An understanding of spectral interpretation of small-molecule liquid state NMR is required.
  • Experience in basic NMR maintenance including cryogen fills.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a safe, accident-free laboratory environment, safely and properly operate specified laboratory instruments and equipment, and troubleshoot all equipment in the chemistry laboratory.
  • Full professional proficiency in English, written and spoken, is required.
