What does this role do?
This position reports directly to the University’s Assistant Director of Laboratory Safety and provides support, oversight and technical guidance on the UND’s laboratory safety and occupational health programs, with a focus on chemical safety. This includes developing and expanding chemical safety programs, conducting risk assessments & audits of laboratories, and identifying hazard control methods to reduce risk. Program development requires a strong working knowledge of safety and health regulations. Participates in safety committee meetings and develops/conducts safety training and program resource materials. Facilitates or leads incident investigations. Drives IOSHA VPP initiatives. Experience with hazardous chemicals and understanding of chemical safety are required. This individual will also serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for the University to meet regulatory compliance requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology, or Physics required
- Industrial hygiene and/or chemistry experience.
- Experience collecting and interpreting data and developing Industrial Hygiene or chemical safety programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health or closely related field preferred.
Working knowledge of OSHA, CDC, NIH, EPA, DOT, DHS, IATA is a plus.
Ability to read, interpret, and apply regulatory compliance and consensus standards. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders. This includes excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Working knowledge of computers and ability to utilize a variety of software applications. Ability to adapt and manage a variety of tasks. Understanding of research activities and systems are a plus.
