Job Description

The Coordinator of Student Ministry (CSM) will report to the Director of Student Ministry (DSM) and join a dynamic team in their efforts to evangelize and provide faith formation for students. This will involve multifaceted responsibilities to support the growing programs in Campus Ministry.

The CSM will have significant interaction with the Student Ministry team and have responsibility for specific programs in each of the assistant directors’ areas, including the Assistant Director of Faith and Justice (ADFJ), Assistant Director of Spirituality (ADS), and Assistant Director of Multicultural Ministry (ADMM). Responsibilities will include coordinating the Mercy Works program and special projects as assigned by the DSM in various areas within Student Ministry.

Coordinating the Mercy Works program includes, but is not limited to, setting up numerous direct service opportunities and organizing formation and development for students to integrate their experience of faith and understanding of social justice with their lived experience serving the marginalized.

Special projects, responsibilities and duties will be assigned based on the needs of the Student Ministry team, and may include preparing prayer services, coordinating faith formation programs, or planning and executing retreats or other ministries and events. Decisions about priorities will be facilitated by the DSM to ensure that work is spread out over the course of the year in a manageable way.

Appreciation of the Catholic tradition, knowledge of Catholic social teaching, sensitivity to different cultural realities, and experience leading formation with students are essential. Experience working with the marginalized and planning liturgical prayer are ideal. Along with their programming responsibilities, the candidate must have well-developed skills in one-on-one mentoring, the capacity to work nights and weekends, be available for planned and unplanned conversations, and understand University policies and resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinate Mercy Works by creating direct service opportunities and programs under direction of the DSM.
This includes but is not limited to:
  • setting up students with service placements/organizations/assignments in the South Bend community
  • working with community partners on meeting their needs
  • addressing issues faced by community partners or students
  • planning and leading orientations and monthly formation nights for students
  • supervising student workers.
  • In addition to managing this program, the Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the budget and reporting requirements.

Special projects as assigned by the DSM relating to Spirituality. For example, these ministerial opportunities could include some of the following: Catholic Fellowship Nights, Lenten small groups, other retreats or immersion experiences, or any other new initiatives or programming needs.

Special projects as assigned by the DSM relating to Multicultural Ministry. For example, these ministerial opportunities could include some of the following: Dia de los Muertos celebration, Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass, Gospel Mass, Black ecumenical prayer services, or any other new initiatives or programming needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters in Theology or related field.
  • 1 to 2 years of professional experience.
  • Must have solid knowledge of the Catholic Church’s teachings and an effective pastoral approach in working with young adults.
  • Appreciation of the Catholic tradition, knowledge of Catholic social teaching, sensitivity to different cultural realities, and experience leading formation with students are essential.
  • Strong pastoral, administrative, and organizational skills.
  • The candidate must have well-developed skills in one-on-one mentoring, the capacity to work nights and weekends, be available for planned and unplanned conversations, and understand University policies and resources.
  • Proficient knowledge of Google Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with the marginalized and planning liturgical prayer are a plus.
