Position Summary

The Assistant VP, IT Planning plays an essential role in a growing, hybrid, mission-driven organization. The AVP supports the CIO in ensuring that Fordham University has the technological and operational tools, systems, and information to execute our vision effectively, efficiently, and equitably now and in the future.

The AVP serves as a trusted advisor and brainstorming partner to the CIO, an air traffic controller for the leader and the senior team; as an integrator connecting work streams that would otherwise remain siloed, as a communicator linking the leadership team and the broader organization; as an honest broker and truth-teller when the leader needs a wide-ranging view without turf considerations; and as a confidant without an organizational agenda.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a proficiency in IT systems, tech innovations and computer systems, project management, and systems building. Additionally, the AVP will have a strong working knowledge of compliance and office operations as well as change management best practices.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees principal management for the CIO, including coordinating, supporting, and at times directing activities, events, and initiatives within Information Technology
  • Serves as a strategic thought partner to the CIO, helping to set and refine priorities by defining and assessing strategic choices, conducting scenario planning exercises, and identifying and managing strategic risk. Helps frame problems and propose structures/models that help people better understand the problem and trade-offs.
  • Manages and oversees a broad range of projects, including strategic planning, implementation, coordination of, and logistics for select initiatives on behalf of the CIO
  • Supports CIO and IT Leadership with strategies, approaches, risk mitigation and prioritization of initiative needs
  • Represents and accompanies the CIO in constituent and other meetings to communicate information, share and develop ideas, and ensure appropriate and timely responsive follow-up. Coordinates closely with the IT leadership team and with the CIO’s executive assistant to ensure seamless coordination of the CIO’s plans.
  • Supports the CIO’s workload and prioritization of time by managing the flow of information, resolving issues, and providing analysis and advice on key issues. Ensures the CIO’s timely involvement in key decisions or projects.
  • Proposes the creation of new systems and processes to streamline the CIO Group’s operations
  • Manages cross-functional processes and meeting governance
  • Builds and maintains relationships with stakeholders who have accountability for program or initiative execution.
  • Researches, benchmarks, analyzes data, and makes recommendations as needed.
  • Supports the CIO and IT Leadership team in developing the operational plan, including the overall strategic roadmap and business performance objectives (OKR’s)
  • Department OKR Management: Track and communicate OKRs, including strategic and team-level priorities, goals and metrics.
  • Partners with the leadership team to define, prepare and communicate organization plans, including quarterly, annual and 3-year strategic plans
  • Ensures, on an ongoing basis, that current and planned technical architecture, investments and solutions are aligned with the organization’s business objectives.
  • Establishes metrics for managing IT effectiveness and for measuring the impact of IT on the organization.
  • Develops, obtains consensus for, and implements a transformative roadmap for technology at Fordham.
  • Keeps abreast of emerging digital and business trends and collaborates with other business leaders to embed digital opportunities in business strategy.
  • Educates peers and the business about the enterprise changes underpinning success in Digitalization.
  • Keeps current with trends and issues in the IT industry. Advises, counsels, and educates executives and management on their competitive or financial impact.
  • Designs and implements an IT-business engagement model to identify and shape demand and align IT offerings with business needs.

General Assistant VP functions

  • Responsible for people management of the area, including staffing, setting performance standards and evaluating staff, staff development and training, succession planning, and other related activities
  • Coordinates, monitors and controls functional units
  • Integrates analytical results and recommendations into overall solution
  • Reviews and approves overall solutions
  • Leads communication process
  • Influences and persuades key client management and project team members
  • Ensures understanding the importance of knowledge transfer
  • Identifies emerging issues affecting the industry and technology; defines the impact these issues will have on the University
  • Works with senior client executives and project team to guide design, manage risk and secure approvals
  • Assists project team with resource, vendor and user issues in order to ensure scope, timeline and budget are met

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field
  • 10+ years relevant technical and business experience; 5+ years in an IT Executive position
  • Management understanding of University structure and operations; and how technology can support and drive the University’s achievement of strategic goals
  • Ability to develop vision and strategy for areas of responsibility and integrate with the University’s strategic and operational plan
  • Proven ability to build trust with others through a commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards.
  • Foster a team atmosphere and encourage team members to contribute to innovative solutions
  • Bring both an entrepreneurial mindset to generate new approaches, spot opportunities, and initiate action
  • Bring a “can-do” attitude and have the willingness to stretch up and down in their role as the organization’s needs evolve

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Understanding of the external environment and how it affects academia in general and Fordham in particular, including technical, legal, financial and social influences
  • Deep and broad or ‘hands on’ understanding of teaching environment, curriculum development and processes
  • Proven leadership skills and managerial expertise, and ability to motivate and empower direct and indirect reports to achieve the institution’s expectations
  • Sound knowledge of IT systems, innovations, specifications, networks and computer systems; Ability to communicate to tech-savvy and non-technical staff
  • Strong project management skills, ability to effectively manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated expertise in the following areas:
    • Financial accounting and budgeting
    • Security and legal compliance
    • Vendor management and selection
    • Resources acquisition and management

Minimum Starting Salary: $140,000

Maximum Starting Salary: $175,000

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
