Patrick & Henry Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution committed to student success, lifelong learning, and enrichment of the quality of life in the region it serves. Serving Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County, and the southern portion of Franklin County, P&HCC is a comprehensive open-door institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. Patrick & Henry offers 29 associate degree programs, 12 certificate programs and 38 career studies certificate programs. The college also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industry-recognized certifications, developmental and transitional programs, and courses for personal enrichment.

Organizational Objective:
P&HCC staff members work with a student population that reflects the diversity of the of Virginia, with more than 40 percent of current students coming from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Knowledge and understanding of specific needs of underserved populations and a commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success are critical responsibilities of our institution. P&HCC aims to provide administrative, educational, and supportive services to the Academic Success and College Transfer Division that administers liberal arts, education, human services, and business transfer programs as well as occupational programs within the same curricular areas. This position provides assistance to the Dean of ASCT, full-time and part-time faculty, and students enrolled in programs or courses within the purview of the division, as well as delivering broader student support.

Purpose of Position: To provide student services support by recruiting and case managing a minimum of 300 adult students who are deemed “at risk” based on the following data descriptions: minority, Pell award recipient, or first generation student. The position and data descriptions all generate from The VCCS Chancellor’s College Success Coach Initiative.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for outreach and recruiting adult participants designated as “at risk” as well as initiating and partnering with other departments to assist with campus-wide student recruitment.
  • Educate and assist clients to develop individual education plans and secure college or training program admissions and financial aid as well as strategies for attaining needed support services through the institution, human service agencies, and community based organizations.
  • Communicate with faculty and others on and off campus to maintain awareness of client’s academic progress as well as to ensure that participants have services needed to complete select training and attain a credential. Complete and submit regular reports to supervisor, President, and the Virginia Community College System.
  • Interpret student placement testing scores, assess/interpret career assessments, assist with financial aid completions, and provide referrals for scholarships as well as other academic incentive programs.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as counseling, human services, social services, or adult education.

KSA’s and or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:
  • Ability to assess the skills, needs, interests, and aptitudes of clients and provide personalized advice on career and postsecondary options
  • Ability to develop individual action and academic plans with clients that will lead to program completion
  • Strong interpersonal skills to help engage, provide support, and motivate customers
  • Knowledge of and links to financial aid services including financial aid available through colleges and the workforce system
  • Knowledge and understanding of the network of available state and local support services and related resources and how to access them
  • Academic and Career counseling skills
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of specific needs of underserved populations in order to attain educational success
  • Ability to work with college faculty and staff in support of student academic success
  • Communication and marketing skills
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office and social media
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Work experience in counseling or academic coaching is preferred.
