Assistant Professor of Instructional Design

Catawba College (“Catawba”) seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor, with a specialty in instructional design, to support our mission of providing students an education rich in personal attention that blends the knowledge and competencies of liberal studies with career preparation. This position will involve implementing course curriculum and professional development training to emphasize quality, smart learning and the creation of smart learning environments, to include online, hybrid, and face-to-face environments. Responsibilities will include teaching effectiveness, professional development, research and scholarly/creative activities, service to the college, and professional and community service. The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in instructional design, to be familiar with online teaching platforms and pedagogies, and to demonstrate the ability to develop smart content for relevant courses. Responsibilities may also include courses in other areas of possible content/pedagogy expertise and may include day and/or evening/online classes, with an opportunity for summer coursework. Catawba prefers candidates with K-12 public school experience and experience in supervision of teachers and/or teacher candidates.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and teach specified courses
  • Promote the undergraduate minor in instructional design
  • Develop and deliver professional development courses and workshops for target groups, to include the college community and surrounding community
  • Seek external funding for smart learning and innovative pedagogy projects
  • Provide service to the department and Catawba
  • Supervise students in field experiences
  • Advise students
  • Maintain active program of research/scholarly/creative activity
  • Foster professional relationships with public school and community college partners
  • Provide service to the public schools and professional community
  • Participate in program review and program assessment
  • Assist in recruitment efforts for all Catawba education programs
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ed or Ph.D in Instructional Design, or in a related, educational field with demonstrated experience in instructional design
  • Experience using technology for education, including but not limited to using multiple modalities, Learning Management Systems, and principles for Instructional Design
  • Demonstrated application of core instructional design theories, models, and processes
  • Experience teaching in online and hybrid environments
  • Knowledge of current national and state standards
  • Ability to work collegially and seek opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration
  • A minimum of three years of teaching or administrative experience in K-12 schools
  • Ability to collegially work independently and collaboratively within the relevant departments and the greater Catawba community

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstration of innovative learning solutions and strategies
  • Demonstrated dedication to student learning and the use of learner-centered approaches
  • Experience teaching at the college level or providing professional development for adult learners
  • Ability to teach courses in other areas of content/pedagogy expertise
  • Experience with edTPA
  • Experience with culturally, linguistically, and academically diverse students
  • NC licensure in a content/pedagogy area of expertise

ABOUT CATAWBA:

Founded in 1851 in Newton, North Carolina, Catawba was started by German pioneers who had traveled from eastern Pennsylvania to settle in the valleys of the Haw, Yadkin, and Catawba Rivers. In 1890, Catawba became a coeducational institution and the first woman graduate completed her studies in 1893. In 1925, Catawba moved and re-opened to its current location in Salisbury, NC, which is about 45 minutes from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte, two hours from the mountains, and four hours from the beaches.

Today, Catawba College has 41 buildings on 276 wooded acres on a residential campus. Catawba is known for its 189 acre on-campus ecological preserve.
