Financial Specialist Associate

Job Description

Summary

The Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking candidates for the position of Financial Specialist Associate. The Financial Specialist will provide highly responsible and advanced financial support to the department. This is a hybrid position and requires at least two days on campus per week.

The department is focused on the concept of learning, interpreted broadly to encompass learning by individuals, teams, organizations, and ultra-large scale national and global systems. Responsibilities*

Coordinate procurement activities including creating purchase orders, paying invoices, approving Marketsite carts, and receiving.  Coordinate with department employees and Shared Services on Concur expense reports and processing PeoplePay payments. Oversee and reconcile human subject incentive payments.

Monitor, reconcile, and report on expense activity for a variety of accounts. Review transactions to ensure appropriate fund, department, program, class, and account classifications are used. Investigate discrepancies, irregularities, and unknown charges. Reconcile credit card revenue for the Clinical Simulation Center (CSC) and external revenue on sponsored projects. Process monthly journal entries.  

Process Personnel Action Requests (PARs) including additional pay and more complex transactions such as those involving the NIH salary cap. Track upcoming PARs, particularly Department Budget Earnings (DBEs) on grants.

Other duties as assigned, including depositing checks and cash and assisting with post award grant administration.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of related financial/budgeting experience or an equivalent amount of experience and education.
  • Experience working with spreadsheets, query tools, and preparation of financial reports.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Exceptional organizational, written and verbal communication skills.  Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks with varied deadlines.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work and build professional relationships with faculty and staff at all levels.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Some experience with university systems.
  • Knowledge of UMMS and U-M policies and procedures.

Background Screening
