Course Description

This course introduces students to the history of cinema from its technological and cultural origins in the late nineteenth century to the global impact of the French New Wave. The objectives are to orient students to a wide range of cinema, establish the relationships between films from different aesthetic, industrial, and national contexts, and illuminate the development of narrative form and film style.

Course Requirements:
Students will be assessed based on reading, quizzes, participation, 2 papers, and a final exam.

Intended Audience:
Undergraduates interested in film history and FTVM majors.

Class Format:
The course will meet twice per week for one-hour lectures, a 2.5 hour screening lab for viewing movies, and a one-hour discussion section.

Responsibilities*

This is a .5 GSI position.

GSI duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluating and grading coursework
  • Holding regular office hours to assist students throughout the course
  • Being available over email to the students and helping students in case they have any questions pertaining to the course
  • Attending all lectures (MW, 1-2pm), screenings (M, 4-6:30pm), and instructor meetings
  • Teaching two discussion sections per week (Tuesdays, 9am-10am and 3pm-4pm)

Required Qualifications*

Applicants with knowledge of film, television, and media studies. Currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Michigan. To be appointed as a GSI, a graduate student must be registered for not less than six (6) credit hours and be in good standing in their degree program. Ability to effectively teach and evaluate undergraduate students. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Background and knowledge relevant to film/television/media studies.
  • LSA student enrolled in a graduate program

Selection Process

Selection criteria include background and experience explicit to the topic of the course. Estimated date for offer to be extended: April 14, 2023. The decision will be made by instructing faculty and Director of Graduate Studies. Applicants may request the status of their application from the department at any time.
