SIMPL Lead Data Engineer

Summary

We are looking for a talented data engineer to join the Society for Improving Medical Professional Learning (SIMPL), a growing non-profit building the next generation of data infrastructure to improve medical education and patient outcomes. At SIMPL you will be a lead data engineer, focused on designing and building novel infrastructure to support data-driven impact around the world. You will work alongside a team of engineers, product designers, and support staff to ship real product features to physician faculty and trainees globally. We’re looking for creative, enthusiastic individuals who can work autonomously with a high degree of quality and craftsmanship.

Who We Are

Organized as a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, the SIMPL collaborative now encompasses over 200 medical residency training programs in 20 different specialties in 7 countries, all of whom share a common vision to support continuous improvement in the medical education system. We are a small non-profit that lives within the hiring system of the University of Michigan, which allows our team to have the flexibility of a small company with the benefits package of a global leader in higher education. The SIMPL team is primarily remote and has flexible working hours.

Responsibilities*

  • Responsible for design, development, and implementation of all things related to SIMPL data.
  • Troubleshoot opportunities for improvement, run diagnostic tests, identify root cause, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures.
  • Ensure data warehouse performance, uptime, and scale, maintaining high standards of code quality and thoughtful design.
  • Able to communicate requirements questions and technical issues to a non-technical audience.
  • Ensure adherence to security best practices.

Required Qualifications*

Lead:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related field.
  • 5+ years of prior work experience, preferably in product-centric role(s) focused on data and analytics storage,ingress, and egress
  • Experience in designing, developing, user research and maintaining dynamic products and solutions
  • Prior data team leadership experience

Staff Specialist:

  • all the above with 8+ years experience

Desired Qualifications*

  • Agile development experience
  • Intellectual curiosity and an interest in being part of a culture of continuous learning, mentoring, and coaching.
  • Passionate about leading, influencing, and motivating colleagues and have a track record of building impactful teams
  • Programming experience with AWS, Git, Python, R, Scala.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
