Summary

The University of Michigan Advanced Genomics Core, part of the Biomedical Research Core Facilities within the Office of Research, provides high-quality advanced genomic analysis to research scientists. We are looking for a full-time, on-site bioinformatician to join our large team of scientists and specialists who process, sequence, and analyze thousands of samples each year.  The incumbent for this position will be responsible for processing large 'omics datasets using reproducible computational approaches, developing data analysis pipelines, and managing the data produced by these processes.

Responsibilities*

  • Process and perform quality control checks on high throughput genomics data. Perform secondary analysis when appropriate pipelines exist.
  • Research, design, and develop novel, reproducible pipelines for emerging genomic technologies. Maintain and improve existing pipelines and codebase. Review literature and evaluate tools to identify and validate emerging bioinformatic methods and approaches for existing and future services.
  • Conduct investigations into data integrity questions, data quality issues, and process failures. Coordinate process improvement initiatives involving data generation and data quality across the lab, and occasionally with key partners or clients.
  • Under direction of core management, lead team meetings, coordinate daily tasks, assist with prioritization and troubleshooting, training team members.
  • Consult with clients and IT partners to manage and improve the delivery of genomics datasets and client data lifecycle. Provide bioinformatics guidance to clients.

Required Qualifications*

  • An MS plus three years of experience in an appropriate field emphasizing both computational skills and biological expertise (e.g. Computational Biology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Statistical Genetics).
  • Experience analyzing high-throughput data on bulk and/or single-cell experiments. Familiarity with a range of publicly available bioinformatics resources, file formats, and tools (e.g. NCBI/EMBL databases, BED files, Bioconductor)
  • Proficiency with Linux as well as one or more scripting/programming languages (e.g. Python, Perl, R, Java, C).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, effective interpersonal skills, and a drive to excel.
  • Commitment to growing supportive, collaborative relationships within the team and the UM research community.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelors in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field and five years experience, or a Master of Science with 3 years experience.
  • Knowledge of basic genetics and molecular biology. Experience with Python, Perl, R, or equivalent programming languages.
  • Experience with Linux command-line interface and bash shell scripts. Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well as part of a large team.

Work Schedule

Work schedule is Monday - Friday. Partial hybrid option is possible.
