Group Supervisor of the Small Bodies and Ocean Worlds (SRW) Group

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Do you love to lead teams who explore and uncover the scientific wonders of the Solar System?

Do you have a vision for the future directions of planetary science, including ocean worlds, astrobiology, small bodies, and planetary defense?

Are you passionate about encouraging a positive and collaborative work environment?

If so, we 're looking for someone like you to be the Group Supervisor (GS) of the Small Bodies and Ocean Worlds Group (SRW) of APL.

Be Part of Something Innovative

Over the past 25 years, the Space Exploration Sector at APL, has pushed the boundaries of what is possible; delivering game-changing impacts to sponsors like NASA and the Department of Defense. This includes historic, science space firsts like New Horizons reaching Pluto, Parker Solar Probe being the first to “touch” the sun, and the DART mission that redirected an asteroid for planetary defense. As a not-for-profit university affiliated research center, APL also delivered solutions to our nation’s national security challenges, as proven with the recent Deep Space Advanced Radar Concept (DARC) Tech Demo, and acts as a trusted partner with the US Space Force in space domain awareness and space-integrated warfare.

APL teams are currently developing missions that will advance the search for life in the Solar System through programs such as Europa Clipper and Dragonfly, exploring the lunar and cislunar domains, and providing fundamental knowledge of our Sun’s influence on the near-Earth environment through IMAP and other research and technology endeavors.  To learn about these APL’s mission and projects, https://civspace.jhuapl.edu/ and https://www.jhuapl.edu/OurWork/NationalSecuritySpace.

SRW consists of ~30 full- and part-time professional staff and annually hosts 6-10 student interns. We operate research laboratories, conduct original scientific research, lead national planetary science initiatives, and support the design, implementation, and operation of a variety of planetary spaceflight missions. SRW operates in close conjunction with its sister group, Moon and Rocky Planets (SRR).

Half the time of the GS is supported by sector overhead funds. The Group Supervisor and Assistant Group Supervisor form the leadership team of the group. Responsibilities include:

  • Lead a team of Ph.D. scientists in research of small bodies and ocean worlds. Responsibilities include ensuring adequate funding for staff and adequate staffing for in-flight mission projects and studies in development, management of overhead budget, hiring of new employees, career development, maintenance of facilities/laboratories, and staff mentoring.
  • Provide vision and leadership for future directions and support Space Exploration Sector (SES) proposal development efforts in response to new business opportunities.
  • Liaise with other organizations including SRR, the rest of the Space Science and Instrumentation Branch (SR), other Branches, SES management, the Civil Space mission area, and external organizations including sponsors.
  • Develop and mentor future leaders including a team of section supervisors.
  • Continue to maintain technical leadership in chosen scientific discipline by participation in space missions or instruments, and/or conducting research in the field of planetary science.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have...

  • A PhD in a field relevant to Ocean Worlds and Small Bodies.
  • 15+ years of experience (post-bachelors) in planetary science research.
  • Knowledge and track record working with NASA.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proven track record of managing technical staff members in an inclusive environment.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

  • 5+ years of experience in line management
  • Demonstrated leadership in the planetary science or APL community through work on committees, editorships, professional societies.
  • Experience in science leadership of instruments and/or missions.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance.
