Minimum Qualifications

  • Students must be enrolled in a Building, Engineering, and Skilled Trades Associate Degree plan at Durham Technical Community College. Students must be approved by the Financial Aid Department.
  • Must be able to work between 10 to 20 hours a week.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Experience with fabrication and software use.
· Ability to train and assist Makerspace attendants with workshop equipment and safety procedures.
· Knowledge of computer design software (CAD).
· Ability to assist users in prototyping and designing.
· An understanding of how to use power tools and hand tools.
· An understanding of design software.
· Capable of reading assembly instructions.
· Competent in reading measuring tools.
· Demonstrate an understanding of the safe operation of laboratory equipment.
· Understanding the mission, goals, and objectives of Newton Makerspace.

Essential Functions

The Makerspace Attendant will serve as a support to the Makerspace Manager. They will actively support students in using the equipment and software available in the Makerspace. This person would be considered an extension of the Newton Makerspace team. The behavior will reflect the values written in the mission statement of Newton Makerspace. Duties are subject to change.

Job Duties

· Maintaining cleanliness of workspaces.
· Routine maintenance on 3D printers and other equipment.
· Assist in routine repair of equipment.
· Maintain organization of hand tools.
· Respond to general student inquiries.
· Assist with troubleshooting equipment.
· Assure users of the Makerspace are appropriately trained and supervised on available equipment.
· Work as an assistant to the instructor for courses requiring use of the facilities.
· Participate in outreach events.
· Communicate and alert the Makerspace Manager of any issues that arise in the labs.

  1. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.

Required Working Hours

Occasional nights and weekends. A maximum of a 20-hour work week as determined by the supervisor. May not work during scheduled class time.

Hiring Range

$14.00 per hour

Work Study Terms
1. Students may not work more than 20 hours per week unless they have a different contract.
2. All work must be performed at the worksite in which a student was hired. Students should be working on campus unless approved by the administration.
3. Students must be enrolled in courses required for their program of study in a semester.
4. Students may not work when they are scheduled to be in class.
5. Students must maintain eligibility with the Satisfactory Academic Policy (SAP) in order to remain eligible for federal work-study. If you fail to meet this requirement, you will immediately lose your work-study eligibility.
6. If you are receiving an outside scholarship from a donor (ex. State Employees Scholarship), your work-study award may be adjusted. Please contact a financial aid advisor as soon as you are notified you are a scholarship recipient.
7. If you decide to borrow loans, your work-study award may be adjusted. Please consult a financial aid advisor before borrowing a loan.
8. Students will submit timesheets correctly completed and by the deadline each month to the Financial Aid Office. If timesheets are not submitted by the deadline, students will not get paid for that pay period. There will not be any exceptions.
9. Students will not begin working until the contract is signed and an email is sent informing him/her and the supervisor with a start date from the Financial Aid Office.
10. Students cannot work a work-study position and a part-time position with Durham Technical Community College, students must pick one.
11. Students will have to notify Financial Aid if they withdraw from a semester because the work-study award will be canceled and the student will stop working immediately for the semester.
12. Students will not work when the Durham Technical Community College is officially closed.
13. Students will not work past the end date of the contract for the semester.
14. Students can not work over their hours on their contract.
15. Students that work at least 6 hours a day must show at least a 30-minute unpaid break on their timesheet.
