Job Summary

The Weill Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Outpatient Center is a multi neuro specialty TBI clinic that aims to bring cutting-edge neuroscience evidence-based care to patients.

The TBI Clinic Patient Navigator for the Weill TBI Outpatient Center provides individualized assistance and support to patients throughout their care with UCSF, serving as a resource and advocate for patients as they proceed through diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

The TBI Clinic Patient Navigator facilitates patient care coordination in part by serving as a liaison between the patient and clinical team. The Navigator supports coordination of any  services the patient may require during evaluation and treatment. These roles involve developing expertise in the operations and systems underlying all service areas directly or indirectly related to neurosciences, including UCSF interdepartmental support for patients receiving care outside of neuroscience services.  The position requires self-initiative, as well as exceptional social skills and emotional intelligence in order to support patients with a wide variety of psycho-social needs. The position also requires the ability to effectively communicate with faculty and staff throughout the clinical enterprise. To be effective in the position, the Navigator shall remain current on inpatient care protocols that affect patients’ postoperative care on an outpatient basis. The Navigator should also remain versed in evidence-based outpatient management protocols. This includes attending educational and operational meetings including multidisciplinary team meetings, conferences, and other events geared toward patient safety and standardization of inpatient and outpatient protocols.

The Navigator provides on-clinical support, guidance, and assistance for patients and families as they maneuver through complex healthcare environments. Primary goals are to optimize patient outcomes and satisfaction. The Navigator Aacts as a communication liaison to understand the patient’s and/or caregiver’s's non-clinical individual needs, desires, and concerns. The Navigator guides the patient and family to a broad range of services, amenities, and information to promote healing and ensure satisfaction with the patient care experience.

This position is a vital and an integral part of the patient-centric care mission as well as direct patient education efforts of the Weill TBI Clinic. The Clinic aims to provide all patients with full, equitable, and convenient access to the clinical services they require and to the health education information needed to make informed decisions about their care.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Neurological Surgery at UCSF is home to leading physicians and scientists dedicated to treating patients with neurosurgical disorders and to the search for better therapies and cures. Our mission is to provide the best clinical care to our patients, investigate the most promising advances in neuroscience research, and train tomorrow's leaders in neurosurgery.

The Department of Neurosurgery is a highly active clinical and research department within the School of Medicine. The Department has 65 full-time faculty working as clinicians and/or basic research scientists, 11 recall faculty, 20 volunteer faculty, 29 non-faculty academics, 50 postdoctoral scholars, 21 residents, 8 clinical fellows, 7 graduate students and approximately 185 administrative, clinic and research staff. The department conducts its clinical, teaching, and research activities at four UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, San Francisco General Hospital and the Helen Diller Cancer Building at Mission Bay. Faculty and staff are located at the Parnassus and Mission Bay Campuses as well as SFGH, VA and Bay area outreach centers.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area or equivalent combination of experience / training.
  • Minimum of one year of related experience.
  • Experience with EPIC EMR.
  • Acquiring knowledge of Patient Rights & Responsibilities, Joint Commission standards, and Centers for Medicare / Medicaid regulations.
  • Experience with data collection, compilation, and analytical techniques.
  • Skills to comprehend and assess patient's grievances to quickly locate appropriate resource for assistance. Working knowledge of the organization and how to get issues resolved.
  • Solid interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to communicate and resolve issues effectively with a diverse population of patients, staff and physicians. Ability to remain calm under pressure and apply sound judgment.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, demanding environment with minimal supervision. Ability to manage and oversee multiple tasks simultaneously, including high daily call volume
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency with Windows-based software including Microsoft word, Excel, Outlook. Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual with verbal and written fluency in Spanish.
  • Experience or exposure to with insurance verification (plans), patient financial services, medical record data abstraction, or data analysis.
  • Experience working with patients and families affected by TBI.
  • Knowledge of TBI Medical Terminology.
