Summary

The Marsal School is seeking an experienced Academic Advisor to work as part of a high functioning team in the school’s Office of Student Affairs (OSA). Under supervision of the Director of Student Affairs and Career Services, the Academic Advisor will support all master’s students in Educational Studies, Higher Education, and our Learning Experience Design (LXD) Graduate Certificate program.

Responsibilities*

  • Provide academic advising for new and continuing master’s students in multiple programs that may have differing needs and expectations around staff advising support
  • Conduct one-on-one and group advising appointments via in-person, phone, Zoom, or email on topics including course selection, programs of study, and degree progression
  • Routinely evaluate, maintain, and update students’ academic records for progress toward degree completion
  • Conduct formal audits prior to degree approval
  • Interpret and provide accurate information about school, Rackham, and university policies and procedures, and serve as an informed resource for students
  • Maintain a working knowledge of relevant graduate course offerings to support students' interests and professional goals
  • Continuously review and update advising guidelines, procedures, and processes for improving efficiencies
  • Work in close collaboration with program leaders, professional staff, and faculty members to ensure students' academic plans align with program expectations and policies.
  • Assist in the planning of, and participate in, new student orientation for incoming students
  • Refer students experiencing academic or personal difficulty to the appropriate resources, follow up on these referrals, and communicate with program leaders, professional staff, and faculty to support student success
  • Manage drop/add procedures and course substitutions
  • Update advising materials in print and on the web, including but not limited to web content, handouts, and resource materials 
  • Provide accurate and timely information to program leaders, professional staff, and faculty to ensure a high-quality advising experience.
  • Utilize Business Objects and other sources to gather student data (e.g. course registration, academic planning, and the commencement booklet)
  • Keep up to date with relevant advising practice and research (e.g., student development theory and appreciative advising)
  • Represent the Marsal School with the Advising Council at the U-M (ACUM)
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, social work, or similar area
  • Minimum of 2-3  years of relevant experience working one-on-one with students in a counseling or advising setting
  • Ability to learn extensive requirements, policies, and procedures
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal, speaking, writing, and computer skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities, establish goals, and produce timely desired results
  • Broad knowledge of student development, advising and mentoring, higher education practices, and campus resources
  • Desire and ability to work with diverse constituencies
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team and exercise judgment
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data
  • Ability to contribute to the School’s diversity, inclusion, justice, and equity (DIJE) initiatives 

Desired Qualifications*

  • 3-5 years of experience in academic advising or counseling
  • Working knowledge of the professional pathways that may be pursued upon completion of the programs they serve.
  • Knowledge of FERPA regulations
  • Familiarity with Rackham and University policies and procedures
  • Familiarity and experience with MPathways Student Administration System, Business Objects, and the Google suite of applications

Work Locations

The Marsal School of Education is located at 610 E. University, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. 

While the majority of the work days will be on site at the Marsal School, this role will allow for a flexible schedule of up to two days per week performed remotely.
