About the Department

The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.

Essential Job Duties

The primary duties of the Maintenance Planner include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Managing the preventive maintenance program for an assigned area.
  • Coordinating and scheduling preventative maintenance activities as they relate to buildings, maintenance and operations
  • Managing some capital improvement projects, along with reviews for shops maintenance, troubleshooting maintenance problems, and inspections.
  • Based on work environment, may be required to specialize in programs/projects to include, but not limited to, current sustainable energy practices, asbestos abatement, environmental concerns, refrigerants, and other programs.

  • Organizes planned work
  • Schedules this work and delegates this work to employees or contractors in the designated areas.
  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Minimum Experience/Education

Associate’s Degree in the assigned discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require certification. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience in the construction, renovation or maintenance of buildings and building systems including experience in the direction or planning of building repairs and maintenance projects or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of work methods, process techniques, resource requirements and safety considered necessary to complete needed work or service.
  • Direct knowledge of one or more of the building mechanical trades with hands-on experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Solid compliance skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four years Journey level experience in building and mechanical trades, working in facilities maintenance and operations.
  • Graduation from high school and five years of progressive experience in the construction, renovation or maintenance of buildings and building systems. This includes two years in the direction or planning of building repairs and maintenance projects or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required License or Certification

  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
