Job Description

This position reports directly to and assists the Director of the Gender Relations Center (GRC), working with the entire staff of the GRC in developing and supporting an environment at Notre Dame that fosters safe and healthy relationships while promoting the moral formation of undergraduate and graduate students consistent with the University’s Catholic identity, mission, and values. The Assistant Director for LGBTQ Student Initiatives and Administration promotes the GRC mission by spearheading programming, pastoral care, student group advising and educational trainings for students, and providing oversight for at least two dimensions of departmental administration, such as student worker operations, communication, assessment, and budgeting. The position serves as University Advisor of PrismND, the university’s official undergraduate LGBTQ organization and oversees 1-2 FireStarter groups of student leaders through the supervision of a professional Program Coordinator. This position collaborates with other departments within Student Affairs, academic departments, and other university units as assigned. This position also serves as a liaison to assigned Catholic colleges/universities, peer institutions, and local nonprofits. In 2023, the GRC will be a part of the new Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on the renovated second floor of LaFortune Student Center.

LGBTQ Student Initiatives- Oversee all LGBTQ educational and social programming (including programs such as the LGBTQ Welcome Back Picnic, LGBTQ History Month, and LGBTQ Graduation Reception); Spearhead all new LGBTQ initiatives (LGBTQ Mentorship program, discussion groups); Serve as liaision to LGBTQ graduate and professional student clubs as assigned. Additional programming will be carried out through supervision of a professional Program Coordinator.

Advising – Advise PrismND, Notre Dame’s undergraduate student organization responsible for providing peer-to-peer support, direct service opportunities, and community development for LGBTQ students and their allies, responding to the needs of the student body within the context of the University’s Catholic ideals.

Training and Campus Education – In collaboration with the Director, design, implement, and assess trainings on issues related to LGBTQ identities, sexual identity, and gender identity (Allyship training) for students. Provide educational trainings and formation support for Residential Hall Staff; Develop targeted educational programs and/or simulation exercises to raise awareness around issues related to the GRC’s mission.

Pastoral Care – Provide coordinated resources and referrals for LGBTQ students in need of pastoral care and support; Collaborate with other Student Affairs Offices and Notre Dame Departments (Campus Ministry, Multicultural Student Programs and Services, Student Welfare and Development, Counseling Center, Residential Life, Center for Career Development, Office of Student Enrichment, University Health Services, Care Consultants) for support of LGBTQ students. Provide intentional outreach to the University’s student transgender and non-binary community through programming and one on one meetings.

Administration and Supervision-assist the Director in up to two administrative functions of the office such as budget, communication, assessment, etc. Supervise several student workers and the full-time staff Program Coordinator. Serve on committees as assigned.

Student Affairs Collaboration – Participate as integral member of a large, multifaceted Student Development team interacting daily with colleagues in the Student Activities Office, Multicultural Student Programs and Services, Office of Student Enrichment, Office of Community Standards, RecSports, University Bands, Family Resource Center and student media groups; Regularly collaborate with other departments within the Division of Student Affairs (Campus Ministry, Residential Life, etc.), student organizations & clubs, and other university units to enhance the GRC’s work with identity, intersectionality, and inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates must possess a Master’s degree, preferably in Theology/Ministry, College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or Education.
  • 2+ years in ministry or administration, ideally within Catholic higher education or a non-profit agency
  • Specialized training and experience with student leadership development
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and assess training curriculum for diverse populations
  • Ability to work collaboratively in higher education with faculty, staff, and students at all levels
  • Supervisory experience, preferably with both student and professional staff
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Effective interpersonal skills including a willingness to create a challenging but welcoming environment for all people
