Job Description Summary:
Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center are individuals who have received their terminal degree and who have opted to pursue further training in a postdoctoral appointment. Postdoctoral scholarship is a time-limited appointment, the primary purpose of which is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career. A postdoctoral scholar at KUMC is expected to: Participate in a full-time regimen of advanced training and research, train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor who will provide the opportunity for collaborative and independent research, as well promote publication of findings and preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the postdoctoral scholar and the mentor, participate in relevant academic activities related to the preparation for a career in research or academia, participate in the University’s Individual Development Plan policy for postdoctoral scholars, have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (such as MD, DVM, PsyD, PharmD, etc.), and candidates should have strong English skills and demonstrate an ability to write and communicate with a scientific audience. Candidates must be able to independently plan, multi-task and complete projects. Ideally, the fellow will be expected to design and execute experiments, analyze data, write and prepare independent grant applications and manuscripts for scientific publications, and supervise graduate students.

This Postdoctoral position is a time-limited appointment, the primary purpose of which is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career.

 A postdoctoral research scholar at KUMC is expected to: Participate in a full-time regimen of advanced training and research, train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor(s) who will provide the opportunity for collaborative and independent research, as well promote publication of findings and preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the postdoctoral scholar and the mentor(s), participate in relevant academic activities related to the preparation for a career in research or academia, participate in educational activities (up to and including the pursuit of a Master’s Degree) as outlined by the department’s Individual Development agreement for postdoctoral scholars, have a MD or equivalent terminal degree (such as PhD, DVM, PsyD, PharmD, etc.), and candidates should have strong English language skills and demonstrate an ability to write and communicate with a scientific audience.

Candidates must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, have a strong work ethic, excellent writing skills, a good grasp of mathematics, and be able to solve complex problems with guided or minimal assistance. 

Candidates must be willing to apply these skills for the duration of their contract toward the development of independent research capabilities by participating in required educational activities and active participation in the duties and responsibilities outlined below. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists a faculty member in attaining the goals of specified research by participating in research planning and proposal writing.
  • Carries out research as agreed upon with a faculty member(s) or supervisor. Participates in the preparation of reports and manuscripts for publication as co-author.
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or seminars as directed by the faculty member(s) or department head.
  • Analyze and present research data at relevant scientific conferences and in other professional activities.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and develop independent research grant and/or proposals.
  • Supervise and train research personnel including graduate students, research assistants, and/or summer students.
  • Helps to assure the success of the department/research program by performing all other duties as assigned.
  • Timely completion of mandatory educational responsibilities.
  • Additional duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: A doctorate degree is required or equivalent terminal degree (such as MD, DVM, PsyD, PharmD, etc.)
  • Work Experience: Ideally, completion of at least two years of clinical residency.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Skills: Strong problem solving, communication and writing skills, as well as a strong grasp of mathematics
