Summary

The Department of Psychiatry in the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking an experienced, positive, highly motivated, and organized individual to join our growing research team. The Data Analyst will work with investigators and other research team members to carry out a range of data management and data analysis tasks for several studies focused on alcohol use and health.  These include a clinical trial comparing the efficacy of several alcohol treatments, and a validation study of a novel alcohol screening tool. These studies evaluate innovative and cutting-edge approaches, blending biostatistics and machine learning.   Data in these studies includes survey data, electronic health record data, and other data sources. Skills and knowledge in machine-learning and natural language processing is preferred but not required. There is also opportunity to work on additional projects and analyze data from national healthcare datasets. The work is funded by NIH and other grants.

Responsibilities*

  • Evaluate and prepare data sources to address hypothesis-driven research questions. 
  • Perform independent analyses using clinical, electronic health record, and observational data from several studies. 
  • Execute appropriate modeling and statistical analyses in collaboration with project principal investigators and biostatistician, including descriptive and multivariable statistical analyses. 
  • Collaborate with other staff and faculty members to evaluate and interpret research findings. Prepare data summaries in tables, figures, and charts.
  • Write code in R and/or SAS for data acquisition, preparation, data management, analytic file creation, statistical analysis, and reporting. 
  • Devise tests and processes to evaluate data validity and analysis results. Employing appropriate data management and methodological techniques given the data structure and specific research and questions. 
  • Attending regular meetings with project investigators to discuss progress and preparing presentations of study findings, including drafting of analysis and results sections of reports and papers.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s in Statistics, Public Health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Services), Informatics, Social Sciences, or related field
  • Highly motivated, organized, autonomous person with excellent multi-tasking ability and record-keeping
  • Must be able to program, manage data, and conduct statistical analyses using SAS and R. 
  • Must have demonstrated data management skills and experience preparing data for analysis
  • Must have a solid grounding in statistical theory and application, and willingness to learn and apply new methods and approaches.
  • Possession of excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including writing/editing/producing reports and technical writing skills for documenting database structure and content.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Professional demeanor and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team 
  • Experience with electronic health record data, clinical trials outcome data, and administrative and clinical claims data.
  • Skills and knowledge in machine-learning and natural language processing is preferred but not required.
  • Prior experience working with machine learning and text processing Python and R toolkits (scikit-learn, numpy, tidyverse, NLTK)

Work Schedule

M-F 9 am to 5 pm.
