We are seeking up to 4 highly motivated seasonal Crew Leaders for a black bear genetic and abundance study in eastern North Carolina (mid-May to early-September). Crew Leader positions are mid-May to early-September (~16-weeks) with some flexibility.
Primary duties include training and overseeing day-to-day activities of 3-7 seasonal field technicians (June-August); setting up and monitoring hair snares to collect information on black bear genetics and abundance (May-September); data processing and organization; data entry; and reporting to supervisors.
Specific duties include scheduling, quality control, driving for long distances, driving ATVs, hiking with gear to sites that may be inaccessible from drivable roads, field data collection following detailed protocols, and performing tasks in typical southeastern summer conditions. Crew leaders will work closely with researchers at North Carolina State University, USGS North Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Mississippi State University, and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
Work will be conducted on public and private lands across eastern North Carolina .
Shared field housing (utilities included) and work vehicles are provided:

- Shared field housing locations will be in northeastern NC, but locations are still to be determined (possible locations include Greenville, Elizabeth City, Tarboro, Washington, Williamston)

Minimum Experience/Education
- 4 year degree; or an equivalent combination of training and/or related experience
Department Required Skills
- Ability to oversee field work, including landowner contact, management of supplies, field data collection, maintenance of hair snares, and organization of data.
- Must be able to hike with up to 50 lbs. of gear to sites if needed and be able to work efficiently in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to work in a professional capacity while representing North Carolina State University on private, state, and federal lands.
- Strong work ethic, positive attitude, attention to detail and strong interpersonal skills
- Willingness to work early mornings, late nights, and weekends
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
- Previous fieldwork experience
- An academic background in wildlife biology, zoology, environmental science or a related field.
Required License or Certification
- Valid driver’s license
