Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Building Technology Urban Systems Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will develop new methodologies for advanced analytics, diagnostics and control technologies, implement them in software, deploy and evaluate them to improve operational efficiency and grid-interaction in buildings. 

 

You will be working with HVAC, thermal storage, other energy systems in buildings as well as building energy and information systems.

 

You are expected to work under the guidance of scientists and collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary research and development teams including researchers within and outside LBNL.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct cutting edge research in the area of building analytics, diagnostics, controls for grid-interactive efficient building operations as well Internet of Things devices.
  • Develop software to support research goals, in particular software for building control delivery, including semantic models, control model and HVAC system models.
  • Demonstrate and evaluate new technologies in lab and field environments.
  • Collaborate with other research groups, industry and external stakeholders on topics relevant to ongoing project work.
  • Publish research results in journals, present findings at national and international conferences.
  • Collaborate with department Principal Investigators to identify or respond to internal and external funding opportunities.
  • Conduct modeling for HVAC system design and performance evaluation.

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Periodic travel for project site visits, stakeholder meetings, and workshops.
  • Contribute to department meetings regarding funding opportunities and research directions.
  • Mentor student assistants and affiliates as necessary.

 

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architectural engineering or computer science or related fields.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems including HVAC, thermal energy storage, energy efficiency, demand flexibility and their underlying physics and controls.
  • Experience with energy management and information systems (EMIS) such as energy information systems (EIS), fault detection and diagnostic (FDD) and Advanced System Optimization (ASO) and building automation systems (BAS).
  • Strong knowledge of programming languages, Python in particular, and version control (git).
  • Familiarity with building energy modeling concepts and tools.
  • Substantial experience in writing conference and journal articles to disseminate research results.
  • Strong analytical and communications skills, both oral and written, and able to communicate clearly the goals, parameters, objectives and outcomes of their research.
  • Capability of working on multiple tasks and projects.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Research experience in energy, buildings, controls or related topics.
  • Experience with Modelica language and tools.
  • Knowledge of Semantic Modeling and tools.
  • Experience with machine learning and data analysis tools such as tensorflow and pytorch.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $6,936 / mo - $7,747.00 / mo and is expected to start at $6.396 / mo or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
