Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Communications Specialist II for the Brain Health Institute within the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Under the direction of the Executive Director of Administration, the Communications Specialist II is the primary person responsible for “telling the story” of the BHI to the world of internal and external stakeholders via digital and traditional communications channels. This position will work with BHI leadership and faculty to produce original content in multiple formats (e.g., social media posts, newsletters) showcasing researchers, research, events, and achievements across Rutgers campuses and entities. The person in this position must write appropriately for the channel, think analytically, and generate creative ideas on how to present strategically significant research and other content in text, photos, video, audio, and graphics that maximize visibility for the institute and foster curiosity and a desire to support its work. This position produces content that drives varied audiences to researchers, resources, and programs at the BHI. The position assists with daily operations and provides coordination and support for communications efforts of the BHI as part of an integrated communications strategy. The position exercises good judgment when handling complex and sensitive issues.
Among the key duties of this position are the following;
  • Supports website development.
  • Completes regular website updates.
  • Serves as the initial point of contact for communications that come via the website.
  • Responsible for contacting Rutgers BHI faculty and neuroscience researchers at least monthly to obtain content, including information such as newly published papers, grant awards, prizes, and other notable recognition.
  • Responsible for creating monthly newsletter and annual report.
  • Manages BHI social media platforms and maintains a regular and engaging presence.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communication, Marketing or a related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
  • Proven experience managing a website using a content management system such as WordPress.
  • Experience writing articles covering scientific content and creating social media campaigns.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have professional writing experience, familiarity with audio/video production, a solid knowledge of the current social media landscape (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube) and WordPress training.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, and programs used to create visual graphics for articles and social media such as Adobe Creative Cloud or Canva.
  • Must be a self-starter, strategic thinker, problem-solver, and value collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Able to work independently and in teams.
  • Excellent organization, planning, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Able to work effectively under pressure of deadlines.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skill, and understanding of website management and publishing, social media management and digital marketing reporting.
  • A strong writer who is able to translate complex research findings to the public in an accessible way.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as a science communications professional in a brain health-related field.
  • Experience at an institution of higher education or a research center.
  • Has an interest in neuroscience and mental health research.

Immunization Requirements


Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
