This is a 12-month, non-tenure-accruing position that will be 100% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station), available in the Agricultural & Biological Engineering, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida.  This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit.  The principal duties and responsibilities assigned to this position will include conducting research, extension and education programs on decision support and crop modeling in agriculture with an emphasis on sustainable food systems in developing countries. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and testing new crop models and tools and to apply these advanced tools to asses crop production, water and nutrient management, climatic risk and environmental sustainability at different temporal and spatial scales. He/she will coordinate activities and work in interdisciplinary teams of scientists in ABE, the Global Food Systems Institute (GFSI), the DSSAT Foundation, and others as appropriate who are at UF or one of the collaborative universities and institutions of these programs. This position is renewable pending grant and contract funds secured by the incumbent and other contributors to ABE or GFSI.

Background Information :

The Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department is a unit in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida and has diverse teaching, research, and extension education programs. The Department is comprised of 35 faculty members located on the Gainesville campus, 5 faculty located across the state at research and education centers, and 20 support personnel (see website http://abe.ufl.edu ), and consistently ranks in the top 10 Agricultural and Biological Engineering programs nationwide. Instilling excellence in research, leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship are ABE's highest priorities. At ABE, the candidate will join a dynamic, cross-disciplinary group of researchers, and will enjoy broad opportunities for collaborations with existing teams, including those studying biofilm systems and biosensors, biofuels, coupled natural and human ecosystems, nanotechnology and nanomaterials, climate variability and change, crop modeling, hydrology and water quality.

Minimum Requirements:

A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, or a closely related field. We seek an interdisciplinary scientist with advanced agronomy and crop modeling knowledge for assessment of sustainability, uncertainty, and risk of food systems. The applicant should have a strong background in crop modeling and decision support systems in order to be able to model and analyze complex agricultural systems. The applicant should also have practical experience with agricultural systems in developing countries. A minimum of three years of experience applied in areas of crop modeling, decision support systems, geospatial analysis, GIS, and agrometeorology is required. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding.  Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.  Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with a suite of crop modeling software, especially the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) and Pythia-DSSAT, GIS and remote sensing platforms, programming languages, and gridded datasets is preferred. Postdoctoral experience in the development and application of crop models and decision support systems at both domestic and international scales is strongly desired. Experience in collaboration with international scientists and agencies would be an added benefit.
