Job Overview

The Assistant Scientist has an essential role in the opening of a biomedical research lab, impacting both the productivity of its federally funded research projects in the Lab, and its potential to acquire further external funding for the lab and GUMC as a whole. They assist in all organizational aspects of the laboratory and complete a host of task sand responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts essential research and trains junior lab members in routine protocols
  • Assists the running the experimental requirements of an 8-10 person research laboratory
  • Performs a diverse array of molecular biology, biochemical and mouse genetics experimental research
  • Provides some of the lab management required to keep the laboratory running efficiently
  • Assists in opening a lab at GU medical school and its transition to an efficiently running that biomedical research lab 

Work Interactions

Receiving instruction and mentorship from the Principal Investigator, the Assistant Scientist assists the PI in conducting research and may assist the Lab Manager in organizing purchase of reagents and supplies. 

They assist with training junior lab members in routine protocols, and in all organizational aspects of the laboratory per Georgetown University policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or specific professional Doctoral degree preferred
  • 5 to 7 years of related experience.
  • Postdoctoral experience as part of a research team focused on the role of Wnt or SHH signaling in cancer - preference for 3 years 
  • Experience in basic molecular biology, mammalian cell culture - preference for 3 years
  • Ability to function independently to manage daily affairs of the research laboratory, as well as to perform routine and complex laboratory research experiments
  • Discretion and judgment for research activities with project scope and methodologies
  • In-depth knowledge of molecular biology, protocol/ method development, organizing and implementing complex research plans, analysis of data, and writing manuscripts for publication of findings
  • Some experience with mouse husbandry and genetics
  • Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and acquire new skills when needed
