Summary of Position

Responsible for biochemistry, molecular biology, and clinical chemistry teaching laboratory facilities including supervision/training of assistants and students, curriculum development, course instruction, equipment maintenance, ordering, preparation for laboratory exercises and compliance with environmental health and safety regulations. Act as the coordinator for the following courses: BMCB 659 (General Biochemistry Lab), BMCB 754 (Molecular Biology Research Methods), BMCB 755 (Protein Biochemistry Laboratory), and GEN 606 (Genetics Lab) and support other laboratory courses as needed. The laboratory coordinator will also teach the BMCB 659 laboratory.

Master of Science in biological sciences (or related field) and two years of related experience, including one year of supervisory, procurement, and/or administrative experience.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the following laboratory techniques is preferred: Spectrophotometry, colorimetric protein assays, ion exchange, affinity and size exclusion chromatography, enzyme kinetic and inhibition assays, native and denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, immunoblotting, restriction digestion, bacterial cloning, bacterial culturing, recombinant protein expression and purification, polymerase chain reaction, and agarose gel electrophoresis.
  • General Application Software including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Lasergene, and Canvas.
  • Experience with the following scientific software is beneficial: Unicorn for running AKTA systems, microplate readers, NuGenius gel documentation system. DNA and protein analysis software including SnapGene and Chimera.

Duty/Responsibility

Training and Supervision:
  • Supervise, train, and coordinate the efforts of graduate/undergraduate teaching assistants. Conduct weekly training sessions for new teaching assistants, providing instruction on experimental procedures, use and maintenance of equipment and laboratory safety policies.
  • Supervise student lab assistants in lab maintenance, sterilization and supply stocking.

Duty/Responsibility

Curriculum Development:
Curriculum development for courses BMCB 659 and BMCB 755 (collaboratively with the instructor of the BMCB 755 course).

Duty/Responsibility

Laboratory Preparation and Management:
  • Prepare and/or supervise preparation of solutions prior to laboratory sections and ensure that all equipment is operational.
  • Oversee the care, maintenance, calibration, and functionality of scientific equipment for assigned teaching labs and the department as a whole.

Duty/Responsibility

Compliance with Environmental Health & Safety Regulations:
Ensure Environmental Health & Safety standards are met in teaching labs (lab safety, course Institutional Biosafety Committee registrations, hazardous waste management, etc).

Preparation for Laboratory Experiments:
  • Order all necessary supplies and reagents in advance of laboratory exercises.
  • Prepare and/or supervise preparation of solutions immediately prior to laboratory sections.
  • Ensure that equipment necessary for lab exercise is present and functioning properly.
  • Make sure that lab space is clean and orderly before and after each lab section.

Duty/Responsibility

Teaching/Instruction:
  • Teach the BMCB 659 laboratory to undergraduate students in the course.
  • Attend weekly meetings with teaching assistants and faculty for BMCB 659 and BMCB 755 to review lab progress and plan for upcoming experiments.
  • Assist faculty and graduate teaching assistants with student instruction during laboratory sections.
