Position Highlights The Optical communications systems Laboratory (OCSL) at the University of Arizona's (UA) Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, under the direction of Dr. Ivan B. Djordjevic, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDA) to work on experimental research topics related to adaptive optics (AO), beam steering, beam tracking, and laser communication over free-space optical (FSO) links in the presence of turbulence and scattering effects.

The candidate will work on already established outdoor FSO link at the UA and will be responsible for operating the fast-steering mirror (FSM) for beam steering/tracking, adaptive optics from Boston Micromachines Corporation (BMC), and running LDPC-coded lightwave communications experiments. In operating the adaptive optics systems, the PDA will be expected to go beyond the BMC software, for instance by employing the machine learning approaches to predict the FSO channel state.

The PDA is expected to significantly improve the existing beam tracking system. Further, the PDA will be expected to integrate the lightwave transmission system with the AO and beam tracking subsystems. Finally, the PDA will be working on novel low-cost approaches to correct for atmospheric turbulence induced wavefront distortions with performance comparable or better to the BMC AO system.

This is a year-to-year appointment, contingent upon funding and performance.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!
