UCSD Health Sciences is a $1 billion dollar plus organization encompassing 16 academic departments (14 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 2 pre-academic/hospital departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and SkaggsSchool of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated towards fulfilling the Health Sciences missions. The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high-throughput genomics, systems biology, and crystallography.

Our 36 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars.

Under supervision the Research Associate will assist with and perform tasks related to cell culture, passaging and transfections; animal (mice) husbandry, euthanasia and dissection; cell analysis by flow cytometry and microscopy; biochemistry and molecular biology techniques such as DNA and RNA extractions; quantitative PCR; protein extraction and purification, immunoblotting as well as performing general laboratory support such as ordering of laboratory supplies, stocking solutions and attending regular laboratory meetings.

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of cellular and molecular biology and tissue culture or related field or combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of Molecular Biology techniques.

  • Experience propagating tissue culture cells including hESC and hiPSC lines.

  • Experience working with tissue culture cells under sterile conditions. Demonstrated working experience with plasmids, sterile technique, preparation of solutions/media, bacteriology & molecular cloning.

  • Capability performing DNA/RNA extractions, purification and manipulation.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of experimental work or general laboratory experience.

  • Ability to calculate and prepare chemical solutions and learn new procedures.

  • Proven ability to follow experimental protocols and skills to develop accurate data from results.

  • Ability to work with a variety of laboratory equipment, including but not limited to PCR machines, luminometers, incubators, centrifuges, autoclaves, spectrophotometers, & darkroom equipment.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to be effective in communicating & interacting with a diverse group of people within a laboratory setting.

  • Demonstrated computer skills, & experience with various software packages. Demonstrated ability to collect, reduce and analyze data.

  • Experience with flow cytometry to analyze cell populations.
  • Experience laboratory safety including radioactive/biohazard handling & disposal techniques, and ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety.
  • Ability to complete protein extractions and immunoblotting and experience with protein purification using column chromatography.
  • Experience with animal (mice) husbandry.
  • Experience producing retro/lenti viral supernatants and infecting mammalian cell lines.
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
  • Must be willing to work with human embryonic stem cells and animals (mice).
  • Must be willing to work with infectious agents, e.g. lenti viruses.
  • Must not be allergic to mice.
  • Must be willing to work with lab animals (mice).

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $51,949 - $61,972 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.88 - $29.68

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
