Summary

The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan invites applications for a Lecturer III position, commencing August 28, 2023 with an initial appointment of up to 3 years and the potential for renewal. This is a University-year (9-month) position with the possibility for additional teaching in the summer. This position is 75% teaching (typically 3 courses per fall and winter semesters) and 25% administrative/service. Primary teaching and administrative responsibilities will be associated with teaching, course design, and coordinating multiple sections of a core scientific writing course (MOVESCI 219) in the undergraduate Movement Science curriculum. The course is designed to equip students with writing skills and related research knowledge to effectively communicate research findings in the movement sciences. The course focuses on developing student capacity for analyzing and synthesizing scientific research literature. While writing is the main focus, students also gain experience with oral presentations. Other teaching opportunities may be possible based on the successful candidate’s area of expertise and program needs but scientific writing is the priority. Administrative responsibilities will be based on program needs and the expertise and prior experience of the candidate; some examples include curriculum development, contribution to new academic courses or programs, and inclusive teaching initiatives.

Responsibilities*

Instructional duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide high-quality instruction.
  • Create/contribute to the course syllabus and lesson plans.
  • Produce relevant and reliable assessment tools and conduct routine assessments to evaluate student progress throughout the semester.
  • Maintain student progress and attendance records and determine and enter final grades for the course.
  • Meet with students outside of class during office hours as needed.
  • Attend and participate in Program and School meetings as needed.

Required Qualifications*

Ph.D. preferred, master’s degree considered, in kinesiology or a related field. The successful candidate must have expertise in the scientific writing process. While a doctoral degree is preferred, master’s degree-holding candidates with a strong background in scientific writing are also encouraged to apply. Two or more years of teaching in higher education is highly desirable. Proven success with contributing to a positive workplace culture, and ability to consistently demonstrate our school’s Core Values.

Desired Qualifications*

Preference will be given to applicants whose scientific writing experience is in the field of human movement sciences (biomechanics, motor control, exercise physiology, physical activity, or related areas).
