Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The USDA’s National Agricultural Library (NAL) and the Center for Archival Futures (CAFe) at the University of Maryland College of Information Studies (UMD iSchool) announce a Postdoctoral Fellowship to support research in the domains of scientific knowledge organization and public access policy. Primarily based at the UMD iSchool, this fellowship will be committed to two overarching activities: (1) conducting and disseminating research on relevant topics; and (2) developing research collaborations and knowledge-sharing opportunities between NAL and the UMD iSchool.

The postdoctoral fellow will conduct and disseminate research related to one or more of the following topics:
? Scientific knowledge infrastructures
? Data policy
? Public access to research, especially federally funded scientific outputs
? Data management, curation, and preservation
? Knowledge organization
? Scientific knowledge representation

This fellowship will be treated as a research position, with an expectation of productive research activity that results in publications and conference presentations. The postdoctoral fellow will primarily conduct their own research on relevant topics within the domains described above. The fellow will also be expected to participate in the intellectual life of CAFe and the iSchool more generally, by seeking out opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration across the College or across other units of the University, potentially to include the UMD extension.

In addition to collaborations at the iSchool and UMD more broadly, the fellow will develop collaborations and foster knowledge sharing between the iSchool and NAL, building upon the existing NAL/iSchool partnership. This will entail spending time at NAL and working with staff there to contribute to ongoing research and practice in relevant divisions. Specific activities will be determined according to the fellow’s specific research interests and expertise. This may include, for example, working with NAL/USDA leadership on implementing federal, agency, and departmental policy related to public access to federally funded research outputs, including scholarly publications, research data, software, models, and other potential research outputs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • PhD completed or to be completed by early spring 2023
  • Demonstrated research program in scientific knowledge infrastructures, data policy, data management and curation, knowledge organization, scientific knowledge representation, or public access to research

Preferences:

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD degree from an accredited university in information studies, or a relevant scientific discipline, such as biological or environmental sciences
  • Strong publication record in relevant domains
  • Experience with collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects
  • Experience with scientific data curation, data management, and developing guidance and best practices for applied settings
  • Interest in the application of research to USDA NAL organization and policy contexts.

Additional Information:

The College of Information Studies strives to be a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and welcoming environment. Hence, we strongly encourage applications from people who identify as members of underrepresented, underserved, and/or marginalized communities.
