The Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia, headquartered in Abingdon, Virginia, is seeking a qualified individual to serve as the new Director of Programs. This position is responsible for cultivating relationships with other regional non-profit organizations (NPOs) and governmental agencies while supporting projects, initiatives and programs that align with the vision, mission, and values of the Foundation. Grant management/development is an essential function of the position. The Director of Programs also serves as the Foundation’s point person for researching best practices, identifying community needs, and facilitating collaboration among regional stakeholders as we work together to improve the health and wellbeing of the people in the Foundation’s service area.

Established in the fall of 2021, the Wellspring Foundation of Southwest Virginia is a philanthropic organization that exists to enhance the health and wellbeing for the Virginia residents of Washington, Grayson, Russell and Smyth counties by cultivating goal-oriented partnerships.

Southwest Virginia is blessed with resplendent natural resources and opportunities for growth. Like many other areas across our nation, we face complex issues rooted in poverty, poor physical and mental health, addiction, lack of universal access to essential healthcare, population decline and economic challenges. Governed by a local board of directors with knowledge and expertise in various professions, we seek to address these challenges at their roots, supporting others in ways that will create the maximum amount of good for our home communities.

We have completed a community health needs assessment and strategic plan that informed our areas of interest which include:

Our operating model will emphasize convening people and facilitating discussion to address regional issues. We will accomplish this by:

  • Partnering to create systems that support growth and achieve sustainable impact
  • Catalyzing new initiatives, programs and projects that fill gaps in our service area
  • Grantmaking to non-profit organizations with missions focused on addressing challenges of the communities we serve

Qualified candidates must have:

  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills (Word/Excel/PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Good database management skills; experience with grant management software a plus.
  • Exceptional oral and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to solve problems and think critically
  • Works extremely well in a collegial, team-oriented environment
  • Detail-oriented and well-organized

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required
  • 5 years or more of relevant work experience is required
  • Grant writing/review experience is required
  • Work experience interacting with NPOs is preferred

Position Description:

POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Programs is responsible for cultivating relationships with other regional non-profit organizations (NPOs) and governmental agencies while supporting projects, initiatives and programs that align with the vision, mission, and values of the Foundation. The Director of Programs also serves as the Foundation’s point person for researching best practices, identifying community needs, and facilitating collaboration among regional stakeholders as we work together to improve the health and wellbeing of the people in the Foundation’s service area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSReasonable Accommodations Statement

Relationship Management

  • Establishment of working relationships with Foundation partners throughout the region, not-for-profit organizations (NPOs) and governmental agencies (GAs) in particular
  • Cultivation and maintenance of strong, positive relationships with Foundation partners
  • Working with Director of Operations and Engagement on plan to provide regular communication with NPOs and GAs

Capacity Building with Not-for-Profit Organizations (NPOs)

  • Assessment of NPO operational support needs
  • Provision of regular training to NPOs as needed via classes, workshops or other means
  • Informational Service to NPOs to help them find resources

Grant Management

  • Coordination of the grant application process
  • Assisting NPOs with grant application development
  • Oversight of the Foundation’s grant review process (human aspects)
  • Support of grantee organizations as needed after grant funding
  • Accountability for grant project completion
  • Monitoring of the impact and effectiveness of grants

Coordination of Programs and Collaborations

  • Research community needs across the Foundation’s service area
  • Identification of programs and initiatives which may provide potential solutions to challenges impacting the health and wellbeing of people in our service area
  • Investigation of best practices and successful programs in other communities
  • Under the direction of the Executive Director, organization of work groups, task forces, discussion panels, to address identified community needs
  • Establishment of programs to address such community needs

Strategy:

  • Partnering with the Foundation leadership team to formulate Foundation strategies, particularly as it relates to programmatic elements

Project Management

  • Completion of special projects as requested by the Executive Director

Budgeting

  • Provide budget support for the various departments/functions as needed

Other duties: As assigned

Confidentiality: Must maintain high confidentiality
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to sit at a desk for 8 hours daily
  • Must be able to attend meetings in remote locations regularly

Other Physical Requirements: The preferred dress is business casual unless business professional attire is otherwise required for meetings
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in an office. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in office settings; however, some tasks may require visiting partners with different work environments.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $1.00 - $2.00 per year
