Director, Center for Cross-Cultural Studies

Job Description


UAF’s CXCS offers a masters and a doctoral program in Indigenous Studies. Reporting to the CRCD Dean, the Director of CXCS will be responsible for leading the unit to ensure that its graduate programs remain competitive in the national and global market. The Director will work closely with the VCRCNE and the CRCD Dean to synergize CXCS’s future with UAF’s strategic goals including a specific emphasis on “strengthening our position as a global leader in Alaska Native and Indigenous Studies'' and “achieving Tier 1 Research status”. Responsibilities will include recruiting and retaining highly qualified faculty; advocating for the needs of CXCS; actively soliciting research collaborations that support faculty and align with CXCS mission; regularly submitting research funding proposals; identifying and implementing strategies to optimize program and course enrollment; recruiting, retaining and graduating masters and doctoral students; developing effective strategies to support graduate completion; and working collaboratively with other academic and research units within and outside of CRCD. Additionally, this position will be responsible for leading the Alaska Native Knowledge Network.  


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Extensive experience in mentoring faculty and students. Ability to collaborate with students, faculty, and staff across the university. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to develop and guide new initiatives and programs. Budget and unit resource management experience. Demonstrated success with fundraising.
Experience or familiarity with Alaska Native and/or Indigenous programming. Experience developing and implementing programs to increase student success. Experience supervising/leading formal or informal faculty and/or staff within an academic unit.
Typical Experience:
Ph.D. and significant postdoctoral research and teaching experience. Program administration experience.
Required Education or Training:

Ph.D. from a regionally or nationally accredited university and significant postdoctoral research and teaching experience required in fields related to Alaska Native and Indigenous Studies. Program administration experience. Desired areas of expertise include Indigenous knowledge systems, Indigenous history, cultural studies in the humanities and social sciences, Federal Indian law and policy, Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, traditional ways of supporting community well-being, and comparative studies in the Arctic and Circumpolar regions.


Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, term, non-represented faculty administrator position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package . Salary is negotiated, based on education and experience. The position is located in Fairbanks, Alaska.
