Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Serves as operations superintendent for Mechanical Systems and Low Temperature units; manages HVAC Systems Safety Training; and, supervises operations within the assigned units. Ensures that strong customer relations are developed and maintained. Manages and directs all unit activities and personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: 
  • With a degree, a minimum of eight (8) years experience in the HVAC industry, including at least five (5) years at a supervisory level where direct supervision or field responsibility can be demonstrated.
  • An additional four (4) years of experience is required without a degree.

Knowledge/Skills & Abilities:
  • Expert level knowledge of the principles of air conditioning and refrigeration; of the practices and techniques used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC equipment and systems; of refrigerant types, environmental impact, and gas reclamation procedures and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations related to the refrigeration trade, the National Electric Code, basic mathematics, including area, volume, and weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Thorough knowledge of plumbing, steam fitting, and electrical trades pertaining to HVAC systems.
  • Skill in the installation, repair, and maintenance of commercial or industrial HVAC equipment and systems; in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade; in pipe-fitting and plumbing methods; in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • High level of computer skills in diagnosing HVAC systems utilizing building automation systems, maintenance management systems, various administrative systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to read and explain manufacturer recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance, servicing, and operation; to prepare written reports; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to supervise and train HVAC Mechanics and other maintenance personnel in the HVAC trade; to program computers for HVAC system operations; and to estimate costs of installing or repairing HVAC systems. 
  • Must know management/supervisory practices.

Other Required Qualifications:
  • The incumbent is required to stay abreast of the latest technological advances in the HVAC Industry.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Class C Driver’s license, or equivalent, with fewer than six (6) points.

Preferences:

Preferences:
If Bachelor’s degree, degree specific to HVAC mechanical disciplines, e.g. Mechanic Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Industrial Technology, Application Engineering, preferred.

Additional Certifications:

Required:
Must have valid CFC certification at the Universal level.

Hiring salary range begins at $109,520.

Physical Demands

Must have the ability to work in on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools and supplies and/or exert force up to 50lbs; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to climb ladders, service lifts, and scaffolding; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Incumbent will be required to wear safety footwear provided by the University.

Position is Essential and is subject to a 24-hour day, 7-day week span of operation.

Position is tele-work eligible.
