The University of Notre Dame, University Relations division, is seeking a Senior Director of Volunteer Engagement and Advisory Councils to oversee the daily operations of the Advisory Council program as well as create new innovative philanthropic engagement strategies to increase fundraising for critical University priorities.

Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President of Development, the incumbent will play a key role in the For Good Initiative by increasing the scope and depth of volunteer leadership initiatives and positions for the top 2% of benefactors by allowing donors to leverage their expertise, networks and charitable giving in service to Notre Dame. The successful candidate will direct the daily operations of the Advisory Council program by facilitating member engagement and communications across the 18 councils, with a major focus on the fall Advisory Council meetings hosted by Notre Dame’s President, Provost and Executive Vice President. Additionally, this person will lead and organize the annual member review and strategy process with development’s senior management team, academic advancement directors and the vice presidents, deans and directors who serve as council directors. Finally, this person will analyze the strengths and weaknesses of existing volunteer initiatives for leadership level benefactors; determine best practices; identify new opportunities including the formation of new advisory councils and volunteer engagement platforms for leadership benefactors. The Program Director must have a deep understanding of the For Good Initiative and a passion for the continued success of the University. Developing and maintaining trusted partnerships with University leaders, departmental partners, and other business units across campus will be crucial to long term success in this role.

What are the goals of this role?
  • Direct the daily operations of the Advisory Council program by:
    • leading the planning and implementation of the 18 fall council meetings in collaboration with the executive officer advisors, council directors, academic advancement directors and special events team.
    • Developing and implementing the fall Advisory Council program involving the Executive Officers, particularly the dinner program and executive officer session.
    • Managing the $1 million Advisory Council program budget.
    • Overseeing the on-going communications with council members.
    • Responsible for the supervision of the Advisory Council Assistant Director of Operations.

  • Organize the annual member review and strategy process for the council directors and VP for University Relations, including:
    • developing fundraising analytics and reports for each member;
    • engaging senior development leadership, council directors, development officers and the prospect management team in establishing campaign and engagement strategies for each council member; © strategizing on new nominations and retirement of current members; and (d) working to increase gender and diversity across the program.

  • Train and educate development officers, academic advancement directors, and volunteer chairs on Advisory Council roles and responsibilities. Develop new training protocols for new philanthropic initiatives.

  • Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of existing volunteer initiatives for leadership level benefactors; determine best practices; identify new opportunities, including the formation of new advisory councils; and formulate guiding principles for new initiatives.

  • Lead the design and implementation of pilot initiatives in collaboration with campus partners to evaluate new models of philanthropic engagement, refine guiding principles, and understand institutional capacity and resource requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5 to 6 years experience
  • Demonstrated project management ability and event planning experience.
  • Strong analytical and computer-related skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for developing positive relationships with university leadership, benefactors, faculty, students and staff.
  • Ability to stay organized and prioritized with overlapping projects and significant amounts of data.
  • Exceptional detail orientation.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Notre Dame will not sponsor employment authorization for this position
  • Position requires evening and weekend hours depending upon activities and events associated with both the Advisory Council Program and other philanthropic engagement platforms.
