Montgomery College, Central Service Campus, has an immediate need for a FT Microsoft 365 Systems Engineer in the Office of Information Technology.  The work schedule is 5 days/40 hours a week.  This is a Non-Bargaining, Exempt, grade 33 position.  Montgomery College promotes and creates a working and learning environment rooted in the basic tenets of fairness, diversity, and inclusiveness. This position is eligible for telework up to 2 day(s) per week after successful completion of initial employment probationary period.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Microsoft 365 training and advanced user assistance

  • Provide advanced Microsoft 365 application support including, but not limited to, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, Forms, Bookings, and Power Automate.
  • Develop Microsoft 365 training material for College trainers and OIT staff.
  • Provide train-the-trainer sessions to College trainers and OIT staff. 

Manage, Monitor and Update Microsoft 365, and Azure

  • Document the configuration of Microsoft 365 and Azure, as well as any changes to the configuration.
  • Actively monitor Microsoft 365, Azure, and server activities to anticipate and resolve potential issues before they become problems and/or impact client's daily work.
  • Manage the College's Microsoft servers in a heterogeneous, hybrid environment.  The College’s system infrastructure includes the following: Windows Servers, Active Directory, Microsoft Azure, DHCP/DNS, Apache, Linux, Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server/Enterprise Server, and VMware.

Perform Routine Audits of Microsoft 365, Azure, and Servers 

  • Analyze system logs and identify potential issues with computer systems.
  • Test, evaluate, and deploy Microsoft 365 services and operating systems updates, patches, enhancements, and configuration changes.
  • Maintain system performance by performing system monitoring and analysis, performance tuning, and preventive maintenance.

New Service Implementation

  • Establish server, Microsoft 365, or Azure specifications by conferring with users; analyzing workflow, access, information, and security requirements.
  • Perform thorough testing and evaluation through product planning, management, and teamwork.
  • Meet standards of performance and security, specifications, timelines, and budgetary considerations as outlined in project plans, work orders, and initiatives.
  • Keep College technology resources technically current (within budgetary limitations).
  • Configure, install, implement, tailor and tune new software, services, and hardware to ensure successful integration with existing College computing and network systems.
  • Ensure maximum interoperability with existing computing and network systems through successful implementation, installation, and testing of software and hardware.

Provide Prompt Resolution of Problems while following OIT Standards

  • Monitor Service Desk and assist users and engineers with problems relating to the servers, cloud, and NOC operations.
  • Resolve any incidents, issues, or requests with minimal disruption of client's ability to do their daily work.
  • Document issues, problems, and monitoring activities, resolution of solutions, any changes to the server environment/configuration, and any impact on the client. 

Communicate to Target Audiences Effectively and Efficiently

  • Use email, project plans, memos, written and oral reports, work-orders, and initiatives to ensure successful usage of systems and clients have a complete, accurate, and current understanding of related activities and statuses of systems.
  • Determine the appropriate kind of communication that is needed, or has been requested and determine which communication channel should be used to communicate to the College.
  • Perform appropriate research, analyze the situation, and develop an appropriate communication that is provided in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure the communication is written for the appropriate target audience and has all the information the reader needs to understand and react appropriately


Required Qualifications:

  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related field, and/or any combination of education, training and experience providing understanding of the field and the ability to perform the duties of the job
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in systems engineering and system administration for applicable operating systems (Windows, Red Hat, Ubuntu) and applications (Microsoft 365, Azure, Exchange, Active Directory).
  • Valid driver’s license is required and evidence of good driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MCSA/MCSE or Microsoft 365 Enterprise Expert certification is preferred..
