Position Description:

Conduct highly technical and specialized scientific research by performing research experiments and cont ributing to independently securing funding in an established research laboratory studying cancer biology. Specific research is in the areas of cancer and sarcoma genetics, the tumor microenvironment, preclinical studies and novel genome editing tools. 


Key experimental duties include in vitro and in vivo experiments involving tissue culture, histology, molecular biology, in vivo tumor analyses and CRISPR/Cas9 techniques.  Key areas of responsibility include conducting research activities/experiments, data/research analysis and evaluation; dissemination of research results; assembling research proposals/grants/publications; service; and human resources/supervision.



KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY


Experiments, Simulations, Modeling or Theoretical Investigations:


Perform experiments and plan relevant hypotheses to test experimental directions.


Collect data and evaluate relevance of data.


Work independently on basic research tasks with oversight by Faculty or Principal Investigator (PI).


Contribute to documentation of equipment and procedures.


Participate in collaborative research groups; provide data and scientific input to collaborative projects


 


Data/Research Analysis and Evaluation:


Conduct high-quality experiments and evaluate / interpret data leading to grants and papers


Analyze data for relevance and data integrity.


Perform basic data analysis techniques.


Compare results of scientific investigations to previously published work.


Dissemination of Research Results:


Prepare figures and manuscripts for contributing author for publication.


Present results in departmental seminars and at professional meetings.


Research Proposals/Grants:


Contribute to new or continuing research grant proposals to obtain funding for research activities.


May serve as co-PI on grants or proposals.


Contribute to progress reports required by funding agencies.


Supervise adherence to safety and compliance guidelines when necessary.


Service:


Provide service to the scientific community, University and General Public.


Review submitted manuscripts and research proposals.


Consult and collaborate with the research community.


Participate in public outreach activities as required by funding sources.


May participate in national and international meetings within the discipline.


Assist with submission of IRB, ACURF or similar protocols and documenting compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines.


Assist in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory and facility equipment.


Human Resources/Supervision:


Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.


May provide functional and/or administrative supervision for staff.


Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.



SUPERVISION RECEIVED


Supervision is received from a designated official.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED


Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and students.

Education Requirement:

A Doctoral degree in Cancer Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Cell Biology, or related discipline s required.

Required Qualifications:

1 year of related experience is required.


Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience with cloning and molecular or cellular biology techniques is highly desirable.


Experience with cancer biology research is highly desirable.


Experience with training others in laboratory techniques is highly desirable.


Experience with immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and cell culture is highly desirable.


Experience with immunophenotyping, flow cytometry, and CRISPR/Cas9 tools is highly desirable.
