Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Qualitative Coding Research Assistant for the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservative Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).
We are looking for a research assistant with experience working with qualitative data to code open-ended responses generated as part of a randomized messaging experiment about climate action.
Study participants have written 1-2 sentence answers to narrative prompts. Approximately ~3000 participants have responded to 1-5 prompts each, for a total of ~9000 responses to analyze.
The research assistant will be mentored by Dr. Laura Thomas-Walters, a postdoctoral scholar in the FWCS Human Dimensions lab at OSU, and code the data using a codebook generated by the research team. Approximately 10-30 hours of work will be required in March and April 2023.
Anticipated Hourly Rate: $20
Position Duties
  • Coding of short (1-2) sentence open-ended responses to survey questions (80%),
  • Meeting with research team to develop coding process and review progress (20%)

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Human Subjects Research Training completed through OSU, or willingness to complete training prior to hiring.
  • Experience in qualitative data analysis (e.g. through coursework or past research experience).
