Student Wellness Specialist

Job Description

 

 

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Mental Health Services and in collaboration with the College Nurse/Health Services, the Student Wellness Specialist is responsible for promoting holistic student wellness through providing early support and follow up for students. The Student Wellness Specialist will monitor students and develop action plans to facilitate referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources. In addition, the Student Wellness Specialist will assist with programs, trainings, and workshops for staff, and students that support holistic student development and success. The Student Wellness Specialist will provide basic office support for physical and mental health services.
 
  • Conduct initial intake with students to assess needs for appropriate referrals.

 
  • Develop and maintain a database of referral resources for social service agencies within the local community: facilitate relationships with off-campus agencies and resources to connect students to long-term support.

 
  • Remain up-to-date with state and federal guidelines for the role of Benefits Navigator. Guide students in applying for and accessing local, state, and federal benefits, including referral and liaison with housing agencies, social services, mental health services, financial support agencies, food pantries, and other basic needs resources for students.

 
  • Assists students in making use of College and/or community services and benefits by monitoring and tracking individual cases and progress to ensure compliance with recommendations, ongoing assessment, and address new or emerging concerns as they arise or transition from campus services to external providers, and from external providers to appropriate College services.

 
  • Maintain confidential records of all students who use mental health services and maintain strict adherence with FERPA and other confidentiality regulations.

 
  • Assist staff with data and evaluation of the major components of the Mental Health Early Action on Campus Act.

 
  • Consult regularly with relevant college departments and educate the college community on available resources and access assistance.

 
  • Assist physical and mental health services staff with presentations and sessions for students, faculty and staff aimed at raising awareness around mental health and general physical well-being.

 
  • Participate in Mental Health First Aid Training.

 
  • Refer students to appropriate on-campus resources and services

 
  • Coordinate the College Food Pantry and related activities.

 
  • Assist in assessment efforts for all wellness activities.

 
  • Collaborate with statewide consortium to develop, implement, and share best practices to help students needed benefits and assistance to reach their educational goals.

 
  • Provide basic office support for the Health Services and Mental Health Services including the scheduling of appointments, answering the phone, and the reception of students.

Specific Functional Job Requirements

Education:
Minimum: Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, human services or related field. Master's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, human services, or related field preferred.

Experience:
Minimum: Related experience in a relevant setting required; community college experience preferred.

Knowledge:
Knowledge of mental health and basic needs services for college students preferred. Experience with Title IX, FERPA laws and principles, and HIPAA compliance.

Skills
Ability to engage a diverse population of students and staff in educational and promotional activities; excellent interpersonal, organizational and presentation skills. Utilize college mainframe and other applicable software.

Personal:
Strong sense of commitment to mental health and overall student wellness and the community college philosophy. Ability to work effectively with the students, faculty and staff of the college; ability to work with community agencies.

Physical:
Ability to travel around campus, throughout the district, and state.

Machines and equipment used:
Desktop computer, mobile presentation and communication technology, college student records software, related business and communication software including a Windows platform, Microsoft Office applications and social media venues.
