Postdoctoral Research Scholar
Hydraulic Engineer

IIHR – Hydroscience & Engineering (https://www.iihr.uiowa.edu/ ) at the University of Iowa (https://uiowa.edu/) seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral research scholar to join Dr. Troy Lyon’s research group (Troy Lyons | IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering (uiowa.edu) ). Pay is commensurate with experience. The appointment is full-time for 1 year. This is an immediate opening and applications will be considered until a successful candidate is identified.


Research will focus on hydraulics, sediment transport, and fish passage at dams and other structures using reduced-scale laboratory models. Key areas of responsibility include:



  • Work independently on applied research projects with oversight by Principal Investigator (PI).

  • Perform experimental investigations to understand hydraulic conditions, design performance and develop solutions to improve hydraulic designs as needed.

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret laboratory model data.

  • Serve as a mentor to undergraduate and graduate students working on the project.

  • Document and report research results to the research team and project sponsor.

Education Requirement:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering field (e.g., Civil & Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, etc.) prior to starting this position is required. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in experimental research in the broad area of river mechanics is required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in experimental methods for river hydraulics, sediment transport, and fish passage is highly desirable.

  • Experience performing fundamental or applied research related to rivers, dams, or other hydraulic structures is desirable.
